Two names––opposing meanings.

Lizzie:

DuBois––a name of pain. The root-word of heartbreak.

Saber was the boy terrorizing our school halls. His uncle was the man who exterminated the happiness in my life by taking my parents from me.

I’ve spent the last seventeen years shutting out the nightmares, piecing my existence back together.

But the bandages are fragile.

Saber’s return to Copperslane shreds through the tender healing I’ve tried to nurture.

I’m left with two hopes.

That Saber doesn’t stay and he’ll stop looking at me like he understands pain.

Saber:

I never thought a name could be a light. But in my darkest moments, Eliza is the single hope I’ve ever known.

She was the candle guiding me out of the abyss.

Seeing her reawakens dreams once lost––that her love is mine.

Unfortunately, our twisted past weaves only suffering for my flower.

And her thinking that I know nothing of pain shreds through my heart.

Now I’m wondering if I should stay, and if she's my fiore at all anymore.

Stay is an adult novel and while it is not a dark romance, some of the subjects matters this book touches on are dark. Not all themes are explicitly shown, however, topics include abuse––physical and verbal, many scenes dealing with alcoholism, recalls of death, as well as foul language. Reader discretion is advised.

Beginnings:
My first day of kindergarten, all I remember walking in was seeing a boy—one with hair black as night, and eyes so green and clear I could have been gazing through Mom’s stained-glass suncatcher.
When I learned his name was Saber, I remember “oohing,” completely awestruck. I’d never heard of such a name. It sounded special, matching the boy I saw.
From the unusual way he talked to the expensive clothes he wore, nothing about him blended in. Head to toe, he was exceptional.
I still remember the heart flutters that happened when he stood close to me one day, fixing a broken toy.
“All you need is some muscle behind it,” Saber announced to my playmate as he snapped the red and blue action figure’s knee into place. The glossy white teeth gleaming against his naturally dark skin transfixed me—holding me into place— stealing my heart until the organ didn’t even live in my chest anymore.
That was the day I knew I wanted to marry him.
Me being five years old didn’t matter. I’d met my husband. I even told my mom that when I went home. All she said: “Honey, that is sweet, but remember that you’re young and so much can change.”
Goodness if she wasn’t right.
Not only did life change in the most terrible of ways, but so did Saber.
For him, helping fellow classmates morphed into shoving them to the floor. Laughter transformed into sneers and punches. The “let me help you’s” turned into “get off me, you’re stupid, and I hate you.”
As the years passed, the only part of Saber I could see was those eyes that reminded me of Mom’s kitchen window—but even those glowed differently. Hatred had devoured the kindness that once shined. They grew darker as each year passed.
Eventually, the kid who was going to be my husband became the one I cowered away from in the hallways of our school—more than that, his last name, DuBois, became a representation of an agony cutting so deep that it hollowed my existence, making me believe that death could be a sweet blessing.
And so, the flames of my affection were snuffed out. Never to be revived again.
Or so I thought.

Jaxon King is a work of art—beautiful, unique… priceless.
I meet him when he admires my artwork at a hotel opening.
He’s older, sophisticated… a gentleman.
At least he is with his clothes on.
Out of them… well, that’s a masterpiece in itself.
But even a connection as strong as ours means nothing once the champagne wears off.
A promise to call me.
Then… nothing.
When he turns up as my new boss on the biggest project of my career, I try my hardest to turn the page and leave him in the past.
Only, he isn’t a memory I can simply erase.
No matter how hard I try.
We have this pull to one another… two colours that merge and create something heavenly.
But he screws up the paper and leaves me crumpled… torn.
Maybe it’s all an illusion and I should erase him from my heart once and for all?
If only we could draw our own path through life.
Start over.
But it’s never as simple as erasing the past, not when you’re drawn to Mr. King.

EXCERPT

“Thank you, everyone.” Phil rubs his hands together as he stands at the head of the table. “So, I bet you’re all really excited to know what the big secret is?” He grins at the table as twenty blank face stare back at him. “Right, well. The wait is over.” He waves his hands in front of him and a memory of a ‘Friends’ episode with jazz hands pops into my mind. Someone coughs and Phil clears his throat, loosening his tie before continuing. “So, it seems they have chosen us as the company to work on the new children’s book series, White Fire.
There’s a split-second pause as his words take effect, then excited chatter erupts around the table. Phil looks pleased with himself, a grin spreading from ear to ear as the overhead light shines on his bald head, illuminating it like a bulb. I wonder if he applies lotion to it, to make it shine like that.
“I thought he was going to tell us he was changing the coffee brand in the kitchen. This is actually big news.” Lydia grins at me, her eyes bright.
I remove my gaze from Phil’s head. “Yeah, I’ll say. This is incredible, Lyds.”
White Fire has been the most anticipated book series release since… I don’t even know when. It’s a children’s series based around a magic, alternate world, and time travel. I never imagined our company getting the contract. Sure, we’re good and have talented designers. But we are small compared to some London giants. This is a huge deal.
Phil claps his hands to get everyone’s attention. “Now, I know you’re all very excited. This is an enormous project, and it will involve you all. The reason for this meeting is to announce the news to you, and to introduce you to the company we will work closely alongside.” He looks over towards the door as it opens. “So, I’m very pleased to introduce you to some of the team from King Publishing.” He holds up an arm like an assistant on a gameshow giving the ‘ta-dah!’ moment, as a woman and two men enter the room.
She’s smiling, and first impressions tell me she will be approachable. The first guy looks nice enough too, giving a small wave as he comes in. But it’s the last man that catches my attention. My body seems to know what’s happening before my mind has a chance to catch up, judging by the way all the small hairs on the back of my neck have stood up.
My eyes lock on him as he walks in and stands with the other two at the front of the room. He’s cool and unhurried, in his designer wool suit. He smiles and nods an acknowledgement to each person around the room. His dark hair with a touch of silver, catches the light as his deep grey eyes land on me. If he’s surprised, then he doesn’t show it. He holds my gaze and lifts a hand to his chin, rubbing his thumb across his lower lip as though deep in thought. The action only makes my eyes drop to his mouth and I swallow as I cross my legs and press my thighs together, willing the pulsing between them to stop.
“Who’s the fox?” Lydia whispers behind her hand.
I stare back into those eyes as Phil goes through the introductions. It seems the fox at the front of the room—still staring at me intently, his grey eyes burning into my skin—is Jaxon King, head of King Publishing.
Well, knock me over with a feather.
The man who, one month ago, gave me the best mind-blowing sex of my life.
All. Night. Long.
Jaxon King… who’s still watching me with those gorgeous stormy eyes.
The man who, the next morning, promised to call during the week to take me for dinner, telling me he had never had a night like ours in his entire life.
Still staring… and, God, his lips are as delicious as I remember.
Also, the man who never called.
Ever.
He is still sex on legs, though.
Pig.

TRAILER

EXCERPT

“You like not answering my questions, don’t you?”
I laugh. “You want me to tell you that I find you attractive?”
“No. I want you to tell me something true.”
I hold his stare, even though I want to shrink into the floor. The intimidation I feel when he’s around isn’t out of fear—I like the way it feels. It’s becoming something I crave from him.
“Yes, I’m attracted to you.” He steps even closer, invading my personal space with his overwhelming presence. But I keep going. “It’s not the only criteria I have for choosing a boyfriend, though.”
Ryan nods. “So, you don’t like me as a person. Cool.”
He starts to turn away from me, but I reach out and grab his shirt. He looks down at my hand and back at me.
“I didn’t say that either,” I whisper.
I don’t let go of him and my knuckles brush along the hard muscles of his stomach. They tense under my touch.
I pull my hand away and his tongue darts out to wet his lips, and he steps even closer. “Let me get this straight. You find me attractive and you like me as a person, but you don’t want to date me?”
“I don’t even know you.”
“Is that something you want? To know me?”
The way he fires questions back gives me little time to think. This is happening too fast. I didn’t come here to get involved with someone new, and I sure as hell didn’t plan on falling for a guy who I can’t figure out. He’s like a puzzle I can’t solve and a part of me thinks it’s because he’s missing an important piece.
Even so, I do want to know him.
“We can be friends,” I say, finding my voice.
He chuckles under his breath, the darkness in his eyes turning them almost black. “Friends. Is that what you think we’ll be?”
