She kept explaining what she did to make the perfect fairy tale dress but her words didn’t reach me. I could only focus on her mouth, painted in a light pink lipstick I longed to destroy after pinning her against some wall and crushing her lips with mine. The rest of the universe, all its sounds and images faded in the background. All that remained was Sage Phoenix, the perfume of her skin, the fire in her eyes and the softness of her body. She was so close and yet I forbid myself to touch her. It hurt.
That girl entranced me… and yet I knew I’d never have her. I repeated to myself how much I hated her. When I tried to recall all those times she had irritated the hell out of me there was nothing left in my memory. Past and future had faded into obscurity. All I had left was that moment and our slow, seductive dance. The more time I spent with her, the fewer arguments I found for why we shouldn’t share at least one night together before life pushed us in different directions.
The evening passed in a blur. I noticed nothing. Later I wouldn’t be able to recall what the prom decorations were, what songs they were playing, who was there and whether I drank or ate anything. It’d been a surreal experience as if we were moving through a dream. Some sentimental part of me wished that this dance would never end. My arms had to wrap around her waist while I was inclining to the nape of her neck and elegant shoulder. Sage wasn’t trying to rub herself against me in any inappropriate way. She was just enjoying the dance and sometimes she’d stroke my fingers with a strange tenderness.
It was beautiful, what transpired between us that evening on the dance floor. Beautiful and painful. The other, primal part of me wanted to throw her on the ground, tear her dress off her and fuck her raw. Something was telling me she’d enjoy it just as much as I would.
My eyes fell on her amazing lips once again. Would it be so awful if I kissed her at least once and savored her taste; if I stole myself a piece of the forbidden fruit?
Her eyes were unreadable in that instant. I remembered how I told her we could calculate with precision everything in the world and our life. Yet I had no clue what that girl’s thoughts or feelings were. What was she hiding beneath the many facets of her personality?
