Cold Hearted Bastard (An Underground Kings Series) by Jenika Snow

Title: Cold Hearted Bastard
An Underground Kings Series Standalone
Author: Jenika Snow
Genre: Contemporary New Adult Romance
Release Date: October 5, 2021

BLURB

From USA Today bestselling author Jenika Snow comes a full-length gritty mafia romance that blurs the lines between right and wrong... and love and hate.

He didn’t have a heart... but he wanted hers.

All I knew about life was anger and violence. Pain and suffering. Kill or be killed.

I was a “fixer” for the Ruin—a syndicate for the Bratva, Cosa Nostra, Cartel, and any other organized crime faction that dealt in the darker, crueler aspects of humanity.

I was a free agent who was called upon to do things weaker men didn’t have the stomach for.

And when you surround yourself with death for long enough, soon, you didn’t remember what it felt like to be alive.

And then I saw her. She was a fragile little thing who tried to be strong. But I could tell she’d seen too much horror in the world, too much of the ugly within people. I should have stayed away. I’d only bring her farther down into the darkness.

But for the first time in my life, I felt a stirring in my chest, this protectiveness and possessiveness toward another living person. And it was painful. It made me feel alive.

Lina tried to hide how broken she was, but I was an old friend of being ruined. She held secrets I’d find out. Because for the first time in my miserable life, I wanted something for myself. I felt something more than apathy and indifference.

I wanted to possess the innocence she clung to. I wanted to break it open and consume it for myself.

I could look into her too trusting blue eyes and knew I’d maim for her. I’d kill for her. And that became our truth when her past finally came back for her, when my present tried to destroy her.

They thought they could take the one thing—the only thing—I’d ever wanted for myself. They were wrong.

When I looked at her, I felt some of the monster that made me who I was retreat back to my black soul. He’d never leave... but he’d share the space.

For her.

A complete standalone novel in the Underworld Kings series.

EXCERPT

He had me off the ground and spun around so fast I grew dizzy. And then my chest was pressed against the boxing ring rope, Arlo’s massive body against mine, every inch of him burning me where he touched.
“You should get your money back if this is what they taught you.” I could hear the teasing, annoyed note in his voice, and my own irritation rose.
“You’re bigger than me, stronger.” I turned my head to the side so I could look at him, but that was a foolish move, as it brought our mouths dangerously close together. “I don’t have my pepper spray, and I don’t have the added benefit of fearing for my life and getting that kick of adrenaline.”
My breath caught, my lungs tightening, when this dark, strange look covered his face.
“You should be afraid right now, moy svet.” His words were low… deadly. “You should be more afraid of me than anything else in the dark.” He leaned in an inch. “If you knew who I truly was, you wouldn't be so close to me.”
I looked down at where his hand gripped the rope on either side of me, the tattoos on his fingers sneaking up the back of his hand disappearing and going up his wrist and forearm. I’d never been one to think tattoos were attractive, but on Arlo, it made him brutally beautiful to me.
“You’re so tiny, moy svet.” He made a low, gruff sound and pushed away from me. I closed my eyes and breathed out just as he said, “Again.”
And so for the next several hours, I sparred and grappled with Arlo until I was sweaty and sore, more tired than I’d ever been, but had never felt more liberated in all my life.

H.L. Packer is, quite frankly, a busy bee.

An avid reader as a child, her love for all things written waned into adulthood, the excitement of real life things taking over. But when her life slowed down as she finished her office job for maternity leave, her husband purchased her an e-reader, and that obsession was rekindled.

Quickly she went from reader to reviewer, and then from reviewer to blogger; street teams and promo tours galore. When she began collating her own book boxes over at Romance Readers Book Box UK and had the opportunity to include her own words and worlds, the characters began talking.

Those cheeky characters quickly found themselves written down on the page, and her first series was in progress.

When she is not coordinating her worlds, you can find her running around after her free-spirited three children, and husband, or tending to the dogs, bearded dragons, and snakes that also reside with them.

A break can be found soaking in a bubble bath or enjoying a glass of wine, often still with a book in her hand.

Ezra

I did not expect to meet my soulmate when I signed up to mentor a young entrepreneur. I did it because I needed the good press. When we communicate online, we're perfect together. Paisley McLeod is witty, whip-smart, and ambitious. Everything I want in a woman. But my soulmate? Hell, I’m not even sure I believe in such a thing. But I definitely want to get to know her better.

There’s always a catch though. We know each other in real life and she hates me. When she finds out who I am, will she admit how perfect we are together, or will she believe every lie she’s ever read about me?

Paisley

I hate Ezra Carlisle. He’s rude and too smart for his own good, and far too handsome for my own good. Anyone that charismatic should come with a warning label. Even worse, the new app he’s about to release is suspiciously close to the app I’ve been developing for years.

I shouldn’t be attracted to him, but I am. And, as if I don’t already have enough on my plate, I’ve got a crush on my online business mentor and he’s been hinting he might want to meet in person. How can I want such different men and what am I going to do about it?

EXCERPT

@PsychedelicAlmond: I know you weren’t always as successful as you are now. Well, at least I’m guessing that, unless you were born into your job.
@TheZMan: what are you trying to say?
@PsychedelicAlmond: Okay, brace yourself.
@TheZMan: Consider me braced.
@PsychedelicAlmond: It turns out, I need advice.
@PsychedelicAlmond: You went silent on me. Did the shock kill you?
@TheZMan: Yes. I’m typing this message as a ghost while the medics work to bring me back. Better ask fast. There’s a light at the end of the tunnel and I think I smell my nana’s apple pie.
@PsychedelicAlmond: Dial down the drama, okay?
@TheZMan: Sure. <clearing throat and straighten glasses> What do you need advice about?
@PsychedelicAlmond: how do you deal with the overwhelm? I feel so scattered and unfocused about my project. I know ultimately what I want it to be, but it seems like the pieces are never going to completely fit together. Like I’m trying to put together a puzzle with pieces from different boxes and I don’t know what exactly I’m doing.
@TheZMan: I feel that way with every project I ever do. It’s part of the process. At least for me, it is. Perhaps it’s the same for you. Every project—at least the ones worth doing—feel too big to accomplish. It’s how you know you’re on the right track. Anyone can do the easy projects. The tough ones—the ones worth doing—need someone as smart and focused as you.
@PsychedelicAlmond: have any advice of how to deal with it so I can get back to being productive?
@TheZMan: Think about why you started the project. What is your WHY? If you don’t know why you’re doing it, then you’ll never have a clear picture of the end result. It’s like walking around in a dark maze, you’re just making turns but you have no idea if you’re getting any close to the end or just walking in circles.
@PsychedelicAlmond: Look at us using all the metaphors today! How very literary of us ...

BLURB

Only one word can describe Chef Jameson Fury…
SHAMELESS.
He parades around with that sexy smirk and those fabulous abs like he’s the king of the kitchen.
Of all the places he could choose to open his new restaurant, why does it have to be right next door to mine?
It’s hard enough trying to get my place up and running without having him hovering around and disrupting my business.
Not to mention the way my body betrays me every time he’s close.
I should despise him.
But with every prank, every verbal jab, every act of sabotage we take against each other…
The tension growing between us inches closer to personal and away from professional.
Things are heating up, and not just in our kitchens…
All because of this shameless chef.

EXCERPT

“And now we would like to welcome celebrity chef, Jameson Fury, who’s here to talk about his new restaurant that will be opening soon over in Bushwick.”
I plaster on my best panty-melting smile and offer it to Becky and Tim, the hosts of the Channel 7 news morning show. “Thanks so much for having me. I’m excited to be here to talk about my venture.”
Becky’s bright-blue eyes dance at me the same way they did when I banged her in the back of the studio after I appeared on the show following my win on Prime Chef a year ago. It's too bad the woman is vapid as hell because she was a decent lay. But I just can't imagine spending time that isn’t horizontal with somebody whose only talents are talking, reading off a teleprompter, and sucking cock.
It’s why I never pursued anything more with her after our fun the last time I visited with the show, and it seems she holds no ill will toward me over it. Something tells me she’d be willing to go for another round in the back when we’re done if I asked. But it’s another blonde who seems to occupy my thoughts lately…
One I certainly can’t be thinking about right now when I’m on live television. This is my time to talk up FURY and start the hype leading to opening.
Becky turns slightly toward me. “Jameson, I am so thrilled that you finally have your own restaurant opening up. I got to taste some of your amazing dishes when you were here last time, and I can only imagine the kind of menu you're putting together for your own space. Want to tell us about it?”
“Of course.” I smile and glance toward the camera like I was instructed. “It's going to be called FURY.”
The co-anchors burst out laughing, and Tim points at me.
“Clever naming.”
I grin at him and shrug. “It seemed fitting. We are going to be mostly modern upscale American and European fare, but, of course, everyone knows I always love to throw a little twist into something to make it my own.”
Becky and Tim both nod their heads vigorously. Tim glances down at the menu I brought with me, examining the dishes.
I only had a second to glance at it when I picked it up from the printer on my way over here this morning, but the menu looked good. The print is fancy enough to look upscale but easy to read in dim lighting. I really wanted to be able to show it on camera, and I'm glad the printer was able to do the rush job so I could have it with me today, but it meant there wasn’t time to really prepare Tim and Becky on what the menu contains.
Tim freezes for a second, glances over at me, then back down at the menu before smiling at the camera. “Well, Jameson, I have to say…you have some pretty interesting dishes on your menu.”
“Oh, definitely. I think the octopus salad is really going to blow people's minds.”
Tim chuckles and hands the menu to Becky. “You mean the ‘octopussy salad?’”
“What?” I jerk my head to the side and find both of them fighting full-on laughter while looking at the menu.
What the fuck is he talking about?
I clear my throat and peek at the camera while trying to keep a smile on my face. “I'm not sure what you mean, Tim.”
That's kind of an inappropriate comment for him to be making on live television. A little lowbrow—even for a man who has a reputation as quite the ladies’ man around NYC. I still wouldn’t expect that to come out of his mouth. Seems like a big risk to his job.
Tim points to the menu, and Becky holds it out to me with a smirk.
She taps a long, manicured nail on it. “I think you have a couple typos on here, Jameson. You might want to get these corrected before the restaurant opens.”
Typos? What the fuck?
There’s no way. I went over this menu a dozen times before I brought it to the printer. It was perfect. I made sure to hand write each item clearly so there wouldn’t be any problem reading it.
I snatch it out of her hand, and the fact that the cameras are running live on me suddenly pushes to the back of my mind. Scanning the menu, my hands tighten on the paper. Each word flashes through my head, and my vision goes red.
Octopussy salad…
Boner-in ribeye…
Spanked pork butt…
Roasted cock with a creamy white sauce…
Roast beef curtains with ass jus…
Leather whipped potatoes…
Motherfucker!
It goes on and on. Almost the entire menu.
These are not typos. This was a deliberate attack. Someone intentionally changed every single menu item.
And there's only one person who could have done it.
Izzy…
