“Do you want to know what keeps me going?”

“What’s that?” I ask in a soft voice.

“This, Londyn.”

I slowly look at him, my breath catching when I see he’s holding a small, black box, a gorgeous diamond solitaire displayed prominently, the overhead lights reflecting in it.

“This is what keeps me going. The idea that, once this is all over, I’ll be able to get down on one knee and ask you to be my wife.”

I squeeze my eyes shut, my heart physically aching. If he thought this would make me reconsider, he’s wrong. It only makes this even more painful than it already is.

“I planned to ask you New Year’s Day. I was so fucking excited to see this ring on your finger, Lo.”

“Wes, please…,” I beg, each word he says like another knife in my heart.

“We may have gotten off course. You may think things have changed, but they haven’t. I still want to get down on one knee and ask you to be my wife. I still want to see this ring on your finger. And I still want to stand before God and all the important people in our lives as we become one.”

I swipe at the tears falling steadily down my cheeks, wanting to run, but at the same time clinging to every word he says.

“I won’t stand here and tell you everything will be okay. I don’t know if it will. It kills me to see you hurting like this and not being able to do anything to fix it, except love you with every beat of my heart. Except stand by your side, even when you push me away. Except fight for you, even when you don’t think it’s worth it. Because let me tell you something, Londyn…”

I shift my gaze back to his, swallowing hard.

I reached my car, and the voice that hadn’t left my head for two years, the one I could pick out blindfolded, hit my ears. “Leaving so soon?”

It was far too close for comfort. I froze and quickly tried to make my escape, but the second I tugged on the handle, a strong hand slammed across the top of my car door, halting its movement.

“Move your hand,” I bit out behind clenched teeth. 

My gaze locked on the fingers in front of me. They looked exactly the same as they had before. Calloused. Strong. Gentle. A brief flash of them cupping my breast, thumbing my nipple, rushed through my mind. I pushed the images away, needing to get out of here.

Hating him for making me look at him, I raised my eyes to meet hazel ones. It almost hurt to see Preston’s face again. His expression echoed the pain I forced down. He took a tiny step back. Not far enough away, because if I wanted, I could still reach out and touch him.

“Why’d you run?”

I closed my eyes, needing to break this connection. I also needed to block out my emotions. He’d seen too much of them already.

Hoping my mask was back in place, I met his stare again. “I didn’t run. I left. We had a good time, and it was over.”

Preston crossed his arms. “Liar.”

I flinched. Even after two years, he still saw too much.

“You and I both know it was more than just a good time, Landon.”

Hearing that name from his lips hardened my emotions. He met Sara that night. I needed to put a stop to this. Pushing back my shoulders, I straightened to my full height. “We fucked. That was it. Nothing more, nothing less.”

“Does Brody know?”

I reared back. “God, no. I didn’t even know he was your brother until that day outside the warehouse. He’d told me he had a recovering addict brother, but no fucking way could I have guessed it was you.”

“I’ve never forgotten you,” he said softly.

Pain shot through me. I’d never forgotten him, either, no matter how hard I tried. But he was no good for me. He made me feel things I didn’t deserve to feel.

It was time to end this conversation. I glared hard at him, desperate to show how much I didn’t care. “It was two years ago. You should get over it. I know I have.”

The front door opened behind me, and I spun on my heel, my hand instinctively going for my gun. Sun blinded me briefly, and I could only see the outline of the person entering, but as he stepped forward, the door closely slowly, blocking out the rays, I recognized his face.

“Preston?” My voice rose in shock. “What are you doing here?”

I shoved back the part of me that reared to life at seeing him.

“I’m here following a lead. I assume you’re here for the same reason.”

“Yes, but no luck.”

His chin jerked in Grant’s direction. “He not talking?”

I turned back to the bartender. “I’ll be back with a warrant.” It wouldn’t be easy securing one without probable cause, but I’d do my best. “Thank you for the information. Here’s my card. If the name of that other bartender comes to you, give me a call, will you?”

He took my card with a nod. I made my way to the door, taking care with my footsteps, unable to avoid walking past Preston.

“Agent Roberts.”

We both turned back at my name.

“I believe Mr. King spends a lot of time at Monteverde over on Madison.”

I nodded in appreciation and stepped out into the cold, ignoring the man hot on my heels.

“So, is that where we’re going next?”

Turning on my heel, I glared at Preston, who stood grinning like he was having a great time. “We’re not going anywhere.”

“Why not?”

I sputtered at the question. “Because. This is official federal agency business, and you’re a civilian. That’s why.”

He scoffed. “I’m a private investigator who’s…investigating. I came here looking for information on Rapture, which, I’m pretty sure, is why you came here. Now we get to take a field trip.”

I sighed in frustration. He wasn’t getting it. “There is no ‘we’. I keep telling you this, but you’re not listening.”

He stepped right into my personal space, his chest nearly brushing mine. Instant heat spread through me. My breath caught as he reached up and cupped my cheek. Hazel eyes bore into mine. “You can lie to yourself all you want, but there is most definitely a we, Landon.”
