Every family has an outcast, and in the Kindall family, it’s Lou. Avoiding them is her go-to move, but unfortunately, skipping her grandparent’s wedding anniversary celebration is not an option. Going alone, though? Total disaster. So, when her sexy neighbor volunteers to go with her, she agrees—quickly. Now, if only she could learn to ignore her very real attraction to her new fake boyfriend…

Beckett Davenport knows exactly how it feels to be an outcast. His childhood certainly taught him that. That’s why he refuses to let Lou face her judgmental family on her own. Besides, maybe if he does a really good job pretending to be her boyfriend, she’ll consider upgrading him to the real thing…

A few hot kisses and stolen moments later, their fake romance starts to feel all too real. But is a happily ever after in the cards for this southern boy and the girl of his dreams?

Call me.
I stared at the text, dread pooling in my belly and making my mouth dry. The sounds of the coffee shop seemed to dim as I picked up my phone off the table. I’d been worrying about this happening when I’d asked my friend—and ex—to be my date for the party and reunion. Why in the hell did I ask Spencer of all people? Oh, right. Because he was my last option. I could hear my sisters and cousins asking about this mythical boyfriend who they thought I’d made up.
I’d stalled as long as I could before finally calling him. Spencer answered on the second ring.
“Hey,” he said.
Bile rose in my throat. “Hi.”
“I’m sorry to have to do this, Lou,” he started, and my shoulders drooped.
“Seriously, Spence? Fuck.”
“It turns out that Amie doesn’t have to go on her trip.”
“And what does that have to do with you coming to Elkwood with me?”
“What do you expect me to do? Tell my current girlfriend I’ll be gone for a week while pretending to be my ex-girlfriend’s boyfriend? She made some plans for us next weekend, and I can’t cancel on her.”
He’d had no trouble canceling on me every freaking chance he got when we were together. It was one of the reasons we broke up. I’d been stupid to ask him to fill the role of my boyfriend while in Elkwood. He couldn’t even keep his word when he was my actual boyfriend and I asked him to go home with me last Christmas. But I’d called or texted every guy I knew and none of them could go with me. Either they had prior engagements or didn’t want to do it.
It had been a last-ditch effort to ask Spencer, and now I was regretting my decision. What the fuck was I going to do now?
“Lou. You understand, right? And you can’t be mad at me about this,” he added after I hadn’t spoken for a few moments.
I hung up on him, dropping my head into my hands. My eyes prickled with unshed tears and that pissed me off more. When my phone started buzzing, I expected it to be Spencer calling back. It was worse.
“What do you want, Cheyenne?”
“I’m here too,” Savannah added. “We were talking, and Cheyenne insisted on calling you since Mama wanted to know—”
“Ma wants to know if you’re going to need an extra bedroom for your guest,” Cheyenne put in, cutting off our younger sister.
I bit my tongue to stop myself from trying to defend Savannah. She needed to learn how to stand up to Cheyenne, and I was dealing with my own shit right now.
“About that…” I started.
Cheyenne’s cackling laugh made me pause. “I told you she wasn’t bringing anyone, and it was all a fucking lie like every other time. So damn pathetic and can’t own up to your pitiful love life.”
I clutched my phone tighter, my blood starting to boil. “Tell Ma I only need one room. My boyfriend will be staying with me.”
For the second time in only five minutes, I hung up on someone, though I felt bad about hanging up on Savannah. I sent her a text apologizing and turned my phone on silent. The anger dissipated as fast as it'd sparked, and I felt drained. Those stupid tears were back, and I was trying hard not to cry in the middle of this busy coffee shop.
“Lou?”
I brought my eyes up to meet clear blue ones that held genuine concern. What the hell was he doing here?

I stopped in front of what I knew was the library from my pre-wedding advance work. “Get in,” I said curtly.

A hard swallow disturbed the delicate lines of Bridget’s throat, but she obeyed without argument.

I followed her inside and locked the door behind us with a soft click. The room wasn’t fully furnished yet, and it was empty save for a rug, a table, and a large mirror. The lights were off, but there was enough moonlight streaming through the curtains for me to spot Bridget’s wary expression.

“I told you, I had to bring him,” she said. “Everyone expected me to bring a date, and it would’ve been weird if I only danced with him once.”

“Stop saying the word ‘date.’” It came out soft and dangerous enough she shivered.

I walked to the table by the window and leaned against it while watching Bridget through dark, hooded eyes.

Possessiveness and anger gripped me—not at her, but at our situation and a world where we were forced to sneak around like criminals. I hated having to hide her, us. I wanted the world to know she was mine and mine alone. I wanted to tattoo myself into her skin and sink into her so fucking deep she could never get me out.

“Take off your dress,” I said.

“Rhys—”

“Take. It. Off.”

“Please.” Bridget spun toward me, fury and something infinitely sadder glittering in her eyes. “Every time I so much as smile at a man, you bulldoze your way between us like a territorial bear. Why is that, Mr. Larsen? Especially when you told me in no uncertain terms when we first met that you don’t get involved in your clients’ personal lives.”
I didn’t answer, but my jaw continued to tick in rhythm with my pulse. Tick. Tick. Tick. A bomb waiting to go off and blow up our lives as knew it.
“Maybe…” Bridget’s expression turned contemplative as she took a step toward me. Mistake number one. “You want to be in their place.” She smiled, but the haunted look remained in her eyes. “Do you want me, Mr. Larsen? The princess and the bodyguard. It would make a nice story for your buddies.”
Mistake number two.
“You want to stop talking now, Your Highness,” I said softly. “And be very, very careful what you do next.”
“Why?” Bridget took another step toward me, then another, until she was less than a foot away. “I’m not afraid of you. Everyone else is, but I’m not.” She placed her hand on my chest.
Mistake number three.
Her gasp hadn’t fully left her throat before I’d spun her around and bent her over the nearby dresser, one hand gripping her chin and forcing her head back while the other closed around her throat. My cock pressed into her ass, hard and angry.
I’d been on edge all night. Hell, I’d been on edge for two years. The moment Bridget von Ascheberg entered my life, I’d been on a countdown to destruction, and tonight might just be the night everything went to hell.
“You should be, princess. You wanna know why?” I growled. “Because you’re right. I do want you. But I don’t want to kiss or make love to you. I want to fuck you. I want to punish you for mouthing off and letting another man put his hands on you. I want to yank up that tiny fucking dress of yours and pound into you so hard you won’t be able to walk for days. I want all those things, even though I can’t have them. But if you don’t stop looking at me like that…” I tightened my grip on her chin and throat. She stared at me in the mirror, her lips parted and her eyes dark with heat. “I might take them anyway.”

Series: Landry Love #3
Author: Amy Alves
Genre: New Adult Contemporary Romance
Release Date: June 10, 2021

BLURB

A second chance, small-town, steamy, new adult romance featuring a grumpy hero and a sunshine heroine.

High school sweethearts don’t last. That’s what everyone told me after she left. Willa and I were supposed to, though. We had plans, goals, dreams. All of which went up in flames—as most things in my life tend to.

Like always, I’m fine. My friends and the nosey residents of Landry might not think so, but being dubbed the broody bartender has its perks—it keeps people and distractions away.

But then she walks into my bar.

Her beauty, her touch, it haunts me. Having Willa back here is nothing but a tempting distraction.

She returned home for her veterinary internship, and is relentless. She acts like we’re friends. No matter how much I glower, brush her off, or walk away, she’s always there. A cruel reminder of what could have been.

Of what may never be.

Because I have commitments. I’ve made promises. And they don’t include getting involved with Willa again, no matter how my body reacts when she’s around. No matter how her heated stares, alluring curves, and provocative sweetness call to me.

She might be the light to my darkness. The woman I still love. But none of that matters.
Because she’s not staying and I can’t leave.

EVAN
Willa and I officially met last year during football tryouts. She moved to Landry freshman year when her dad was transferred to our county sheriff’s office as a sergeant. We knew of each other, but I didn’t have the time or inclination to venture outside my friend circle to get to know the new girl.
Then, at the start of junior year, she tried out for the cheer team. The year before, cheer usually practiced after school at the same time as football, but I had never really paid too much attention.
Cheerleaders were a fairly predictable group of like-minded girls and held a constant presence around the football team. Like buzzing bees. This year, though, there were a few new additions during tryouts. Specifically, a certain enthusiastic blonde who had caught my attention.
I remember being confused about why my gaze kept going back to that one girl. She may have drawn my focus several times before, in class and with how she spoke and interacted with other people; but what caused my reaction to go from mild interest and a flicker of a spark to laser-focused attention and a flaming blaze?
I considered that it may have been the spandex cheer briefs she’d been wearing, but I think it was just… her. I’d seen a different side to her, and it made that spark turn to flame.
Later, I learned that Willa loves music, is a decent singer, but is terribly uncoordinated.
She ended up not making the team and joined the school council and newspaper instead. But she still left her mark on the cheer team.
At least two girls had walked out of cheer tryouts still bleeding or bruised from Willa’s floundering efforts. Watching from afar, all I had seen was one chaotic blur of legs and hair. It had been entertaining, and at that point in my life, I welcomed any chance for a laugh or to feel content.
Not that I had been lacking in friends or females. I’m no quarterback, but as a wide receiver, I wasn’t alone unless I wanted it that way. According to Chelsey, the head cheerleader, I’ve got the tall, dark, and dangerous look going for me. Although, she’d only mentioned this twice, and both times were right before she stuck her tongue in my mouth.
With my home situation growing into a bigger obstacle each year, I’d had little time for parties and girls outside of school and football. But last year, there was this disastrous and sweet, honey-blonde girl who captivated me.
Prior to officially meeting her, I thought her name was Willow. She was in my English and biology classes, but we hadn’t spoken or interacted much. She was a slight wisp of a girl with slender, long legs she didn’t show off nearly enough. She wore her hair down in long, shiny waves; unless it was a test day, then she put her hair in serious mode—meaning a ponytail.
I don’t know why I noticed that, but I did. I also noticed that she did things with intention and kindness.
I stuck with my group of loud, obnoxious assholes, while she flitted around from group to group. She could make friends with anyone.
It wasn’t a sudden attraction. I had been watching her without acknowledging it. Then one day, there she was, unavoidable, glowing, and of course, accidentally maiming the other cheerleaders.
She was this glaringly bright light, burning into the retinas of my dark existence. The only light spots I had in my life were football and my brother. And the latter got on my nerves at least half the time.
Was I that dramatic and annoying at twelve years old? Shit, I hope not.
After football practice that day in the first week of junior year, I skipped heading into the locker room and instead caught up with her. Best decision I made that year. Hell, the best decision of my life so far.
