Ezra

I did not expect to meet my soulmate when I signed up to mentor a young entrepreneur. I did it because I needed the good press. When we communicate online, we're perfect together. Paisley McLeod is witty, whip-smart, and ambitious. Everything I want in a woman. But my soulmate? Hell, I’m not even sure I believe in such a thing. But I definitely want to get to know her better.

There’s always a catch though. We know each other in real life and she hates me. When she finds out who I am, will she admit how perfect we are together, or will she believe every lie she’s ever read about me?

Paisley

I hate Ezra Carlisle. He’s rude and too smart for his own good, and far too handsome for my own good. Anyone that charismatic should come with a warning label. Even worse, the new app he’s about to release is suspiciously close to the app I’ve been developing for years.

I shouldn’t be attracted to him, but I am. And, as if I don’t already have enough on my plate, I’ve got a crush on my online business mentor and he’s been hinting he might want to meet in person. How can I want such different men and what am I going to do about it?

EXCERPT

@PsychedelicAlmond: I know you weren’t always as successful as you are now. Well, at least I’m guessing that, unless you were born into your job.
@TheZMan: what are you trying to say?
@PsychedelicAlmond: Okay, brace yourself.
@TheZMan: Consider me braced.
@PsychedelicAlmond: It turns out, I need advice.
@PsychedelicAlmond: You went silent on me. Did the shock kill you?
@TheZMan: Yes. I’m typing this message as a ghost while the medics work to bring me back. Better ask fast. There’s a light at the end of the tunnel and I think I smell my nana’s apple pie.
@PsychedelicAlmond: Dial down the drama, okay?
@TheZMan: Sure. <clearing throat and straighten glasses> What do you need advice about?
@PsychedelicAlmond: how do you deal with the overwhelm? I feel so scattered and unfocused about my project. I know ultimately what I want it to be, but it seems like the pieces are never going to completely fit together. Like I’m trying to put together a puzzle with pieces from different boxes and I don’t know what exactly I’m doing.
@TheZMan: I feel that way with every project I ever do. It’s part of the process. At least for me, it is. Perhaps it’s the same for you. Every project—at least the ones worth doing—feel too big to accomplish. It’s how you know you’re on the right track. Anyone can do the easy projects. The tough ones—the ones worth doing—need someone as smart and focused as you.
@PsychedelicAlmond: have any advice of how to deal with it so I can get back to being productive?
@TheZMan: Think about why you started the project. What is your WHY? If you don’t know why you’re doing it, then you’ll never have a clear picture of the end result. It’s like walking around in a dark maze, you’re just making turns but you have no idea if you’re getting any close to the end or just walking in circles.
@PsychedelicAlmond: Look at us using all the metaphors today! How very literary of us ...

EXCERPT

By the time closing comes around, I've nearly forgotten about Jacob showing up. Okay, that's a complete lie; I haven't forgotten at all. But I've just about convinced myself that he'll email me later. He stopped by because he was in the neighborhood and that'll be the end of it.
I go out the backdoor to my car and I'm halfway there when I hear my name.
"Bethany!"
"Yeah?" I spin around without thinking and shit, shit, shit! There he is. Leaning against the back of the building, one leg bent and his shoe against the wall. Looking like a damn model for something hot and sexy. He pushes off and strides towards me and I swear I think I die right then.
I figured he'd be handsome. I mean, it wouldn't matter to me because I'm already mostly in love with this man. But the hot-as-a-damn-movie-star man coming towards me...nothing could have prepared me for that. His short, cropped hair is a shade somewhere between blond and brown, and he's tan He's smiling widely with straight white teeth, and he's got those little lines that fan out from the corners of his eyes. You know, like George Clooney has?
I'm sure I'm staring at him gape-mouthed, but I am frozen to my spot. I can't run now.
When he's close enough that I can see that his eyes are mossy brown, I take a step back and then again. My butt hits the side of my vehicle, and he closes the distance between us. He's ridiculously tall.
Okay, it's really me who is ridiculously short, but whatever. Two toned arms bracket my shoulders as he leans in and...wraps me in a hug.
Okay, so maybe he's taken one look at me and has changed his mind about pursuing anything romantic with me now that he's seen the size of my ass. Friends, I can do. I'll still get my heart broken when he meets a pretty, thin woman who doesn't have ugly scars. But I'm familiar with those feelings. So I hug him back.
"There she is," he murmurs against my head. And then he kisses the top of my head, or maybe just presses his chin there. I don't know which. He steps back from me.
I look away from his face because it's like looking at the damn sun. Instead, I find myself cataloguing the veins and scars and tattoos that line his crazy hot forearms. It's hot out here. I mean, of course it is, because it's Texas and we're almost always hot. But he's hot and he's making things around me hotter.
One finger tips my chin up so I have to look at his face.
He smiles at me.
"Why are you hiding from me?"
I open my mouth, then close it because what the hell do I say to that?
"Just because we've never seen each other before doesn't mean we don't know each other," he says. "Tell me why you asked your boss to lie to me and say you weren't there?"
I feel my eyes widen. "You saw me?"
He gives me a tiny grin. He's still holding my chin, but instead of just that one finger, he's got my face cradled in one of his palms. His thumb strokes my skin. And even that little bit of contact is enough to set my entire body on fire.
Desire pools deep in my core and my nipples harden.
But then he drops his hand and steps back.
"No, sweetheart, I didn't see you. But I did see your boss's watch light up with your text."
Sweetheart. He's used the term of endearment in a few of our emails, but I just figured it was a slip. I swallow past a lump.
"What are you doing here, Jacob?"
He gives me an easy smile. "Can a friend not come visit another friend?"
Friend. Even though I know I can't have more, hearing the word--getting so blatantly friend-zoned--hurts.
I swallow past the knot in my throat that feels more like a blade. "Yes, of course."
He bumps my elbow with his. "Any chance you know where we can go for some of that good Tex-Mex you're always telling me about?"
I smile because I just can't help it.
"Of course."
What was I thinking wanting to hide from him? We can be easy together. I can lick my wounds when I'm alone, but for right now, while he's in town, I can enjoy his company. And the view, because he's so damn handsome it's ridiculous.

EXCERPT

“I hit you with my car,” I say. Just call me Captain Obvious.
He starts to stand, and I practically lunge for him. “You shouldn’t move! You might have a neck injury!”
He just stares at me while I continue to say all the dumb things running through my head.
“Do you need the hospital? Do you think you have internal bleeding. Oh, or a concussion?”
Oh my God. Why am I still talking?
He still doesn’t answer. Instead he leverages himself to a standing position all with the usage of only one leg and his arms. His other leg he kind of hovers over the ground, not putting weight on it.
“Oh my God, did I break your leg? Shit, I’m such a disaster.” I wedge myself under his arm, and then brace my arm around his waist. “Lean on me.”
“I’ve got it,” he growls.
“Don’t be a baby, I can help. It’s my fault you’re injured.” I shouldn’t notice how divine he smells, but I do. Because that’s me - if a moment can be made awkward or inappropriate, I’ll be the driving force.
But this is next level, even for me, because I nearly just killed him and I should not be sniffing him!
But seriously, as we clumsily make our way to the front porch, I want to bury my face in his neck and inhale him. It’s like pine and fresh water and linen and a summer rainstorm and sexy man all rolled into one.
He’s also massive. I’m not a tiny woman. I’m not tall, but I’m not small. If I was being politically correct I might say I’m big boned, but the truth of the matter is, I’m what the media would call plus sized. I have big boobs, a tummy, big hips a big butt. I’m just full of curves and bumps and I’ve been in my own skin enough to love myself, but I know I’m not what most men want.
“I’m not being a baby,” he grumbles with that low, sexy voice of his. “You’re the size of a child so I’m not sure how leaning on you is going to help me.”
“I’m not the size of a child!”
“Pretty much,” he grumbles.
“Now that you’re actually speaking to me, do you need to go to the hospital?”
“No.”
“Are you sure? Because you could have a concussion. Nearly four million people get concussions every year. True, most of those of sports related, but—”
“I don’t have a concussion. You bumped me. I fell down. That’s it.”
“A good percentage of traumatic brain injury related deaths are due to falls, particularly among small children and the elderly.”
His gaze narrows as he stops walking to glare down at me. “I’m not fucking elderly.”
I swallow and then clear my throat. “No. You’re not. Obviously. You’re—” A huge, sexy beast of a man. Who is not fragile or elderly.
Every cell in my body lights up with neon flashing signs. Not safe! Not safe! Not safe!
And those neon signs aren’t worried at all about my physically safety. No, this guy isn’t giving off any serial killer vibes. He’s giving off sexy, beast man vibes. The kind that effortlessly tear down the defenses of demur homebodies like me.
Woozza.
I am in so much trouble here.
Except, I’m not. Because he’s a sexy beast and I’m … well, me.
Then again, as we stand there in the sun-dappled shade in front of his house, with his arm around my shoulders and my body wedged so close to his, his gaze shifts from a glare to something else as his eyes roam my face and then drop to my lips.
And I get the strangest sensation that he’s thinking about kissing me.
Which is totally ridiculous. Because men never think about kissing me.
“Yep,” I say out loud. “You have a concussion. Almost definitely.”
Why else would he be looking at me like that?
“I don’t have a concussion,” he says, taking another step toward the house.
Regardless of what he says, I am helping him. “I’m like your human crutch,” I say brightly, trying to make him at least crack a tiny smile.
There’s no way I’m letting him tackle those steps by himself. What if he falls again? Which seems very likely given his befuddled state.
He grunts. “That’s not what I’d call you.”
Rude.
Once we reach the porch, he holds onto one of the thick wooden beams and hops on one leg up the stairs. It’s an impressive feat of pure, unadulterated strength and I’m not unaffected. Nope, I’m staring at his ass muscles moving beneath the denim of his jeans.
“You have very good muscle control for someone with a concussion.”
“I don’t have a concussion.”
“We’ll see.”
Only I would manage to find the hottest man in the world in the middle of nowhere in the mountains and then hit him with my car.
