“I want to know what waits for me as soon as I open this door and walk into your home?”

My lips twitch then curl into what I assume appears a devilish grin, at least the sudden stricken look on her face makes me believe it. Lifting my hand, I use my index finger, touching her temple then dragging it down the side of her face, across her jaw, before I trace her lips.

Those lips tremble beneath my touch, just as they should. She should forever be fearful of me. I am not her friend. I am not a good man, and although I saved her from being abused, twice, that doesn’t mean that I will not hurt her myself.

“I make no promises, Luciana. Just know that whatever awaits you is only temporary, until I find you a permanent home.”

She blinks, her eyes narrowing, then her face turning a beautiful shade of pink beneath her olive skin. “I am not an animal, Gavino. I am not a possession to be given freely to another person. I am a human being,” she grinds, her voice rising with each word.

I snort. “That, Luciana, is exactly what you are—a possession. I own you, your body, everything about you, until I decide that I no longer want you. Then, just as your father did, I will sell you off for the good of the famiglia.”

I was born and raised in a small farming town in California. I met my husband when I was 16 and he was 19. We married four years later and have two little boys! We lived in Oregon for a few years while he served in the US Coast Guard. Texas is now where we call home, where our boots rest, and where we’re raising our two little boys and a chocolate lab named Optimus Prime.
