Work in Progress by Michelle Morgan

Release Date: June 27, 2019

Cover Design: Damon Freeman

Synopsis

Publishing-house receptionist and aspiring writer Lindsey Deal spends her days dodging bullets: one insufferable boss, one sinister-looking spider, and, most daunting, a certain romance novel-in-progress that screams to be finished.

The first two are easy enough. The third requires…motivation.

Enter: Rian Harper. Mysterious. Cool. Sexy as sin. The rule-breaking, covered-in-tattoos musician may be just the motivation Lindsey needs to finish her manuscript—and test the limits of her comfort zone.

But he’s too old for her. Too afraid to open up. Too much her new boss.

Single dad, brooding artist, corrupter of women. What Rian Harper needs is a business partner, maybe a creative partner. Someone who can have his back. He doesn’t need her tempting him to fall in love. It could ruin them both—especially when the too-sweet, too-pure, too-young woman discovers his longest-held secret.

Work in Progress (Cook County, #1) by BJ Harvey

Title: Work in Progress
Series: Cook County #1
Author: BJ Harvey
Genre: Romantic Comedy
Release Date: May 22, 2019
Flipping houses if not for the weak of heart. Neither is falling in love.
Jamie Cook is a work-in-progress. He’s always wanted what his parents have: a good marriage, lots of kids, and financial security. He thought he’d have the first two with his ex-girlfriend while the third would come once he got his house-flipping business off the ground. When his ex doesn’t subscribe to his five-year plan, he makes Cook Brothers Construction his sole focus. Then he moves next door to April Williams, a sassy single mom he can’t stop riling up. Throw in her matchmaking mother-in-law, who’s set her sights on Jamie being April’s knight in a leather tool belt, and a house threatening Jamie’s sanity, and it should be a recipe for disaster, but Jamie wants this three-month project to last forever. That’s if he can stop being the neighbor from hell and prove to April he’s not just flipping a house—he wants to flip her heart.

“Jamie?”
“Yeah, buddy?”
“So, are you my new dad now?”
I open my mouth to say something, but nothing comes out.
Before I’m able to find the power of speech again, he continues, “But you’re my boss too?”
I decide to play along. “Your boss?”
He nods. “At the house. Building and stuff.”
“Well, not exact—”
“So that makes you my dad boss then?” He has the most serious look on his face, and I’m totally out of my depth here.
“Um…” I look to the door, willing April to walk through it and save me.
“Dad boss then,” he says again with a nod. “That’s good. Means I can get more money now.”
I cough, reaching over to the nightstand to take a long, much-needed drink from my coffee cup. I say the only thing that comes to mind. “Sure thing, buddy.”
“Awesome,” he says, a huge smile transforming his face. “Then I can buy flowers for Mom, so the next time you break our garden, I can fix it and make her smile like you did.”
“That’s a great idea. Now… have you seen my pants?”
“Are you not wearing pajamas?” Without warning, he lifts the sheet covering me from the waist down. “Oh, you’ve got big boy boxers like me. Mommy says I can only wear them when I wear shorts though. Are you sure you wore pants last night? Maybe you wore shorts because you’ve got your big boy boxers on.” And thank fuck I kept them on before falling to sleep last night.
“I was definitely wearing pants. Do you want to look in the bathroom for me?”
“It’s okay. I don’t need to. I saw Mommy carrying them into the kitchen.”
“Lovely?” I yell, hoping she can hear me. When a loud beat starts coming from downstairs, my bullshit sensor starts pinging. April is up to something, especially since it’s the exact same Queen song I was playing the night we first met. Two can play this game.
“Should we go get pancakes?” I ask.
“Yeah!” he says, jumping up and down before running out of the room.
I move to the bathroom and use the facilities. Searching for my clothes, I come up empty. Sure enough, my pants have indeed disappeared. With nothing else left to do about it, I walk out of the bedroom and down the stairs, wearing nothing but my boxer shorts.
I stop still the moment I enter the kitchen. Just as I’d imagined, April is sitting at the dining table, coffee in hand, her legs up, her ankles crossed on a chair with a wicked smirk on her face. Her only saving grace is the huge plate of pancakes piled high in the middle of the table.
“Hey Ax, how’s breakfast?” I ask.
“So good,” he groans, stuffing another forkful of pancake in his mouth.
“What are you doing after school today?”
His head snaps up. “Nuff-thing,” he says with a mouthful of food.
“Good. I was thinking you could bring your mom and gran over and we could give them a tour of the house now that it’s finished.”
“Oh wow. Yeah,” he says, puffing out his little chest. “I can show them where I worked.”
“Yep,” I reply with a grin. With his attention back on his rapidly emptying plate, I move in front of April. ”You look good in my tee. Did you also find my pants on your travels?”
Her lips twitch. ”I thought I’d do some laundry.”

“What did I do to ever deserve you?” He rumbles the words and they vibrate against my skin.
I smile and pull back enough to meet his hooded gaze. “I guess I just have lower standards than you do.”
His eyes widen before he throws his head back and laughs, my attention riveted on the way his Adam’s apple moves, how his shoulders shake, and the huge grin curving his mouth when he looks back at me.
“Can’t argue with that,” he says.
My smirk grows. “Well, there’s a first.”
His lips twitch as he shakes his head. “I’m far from complaining. Punching above my weight means I get to be here with you.”
Inside, I’m swooning, but it’s far too soon to show my hand. Jamie has not put a single foot wrong since knocking on my door earlier tonight, and for a man who’s known for consistently riling me up for the sake of it, it’s a surprising development.
“Good to know. Would hate for you to get a complex,” I say. The longer we sit here staring at the each other, the more the atmosphere changes between us, morphing from flirty to fierce and threatening to scorch us where we sit. We’ve kissed—well, not swallow-each-other-whole kissed. But when Jamie kissed me on my doorstep last week, my aggravation toward the man transformed into something entirely unexpected. Something I hadn’t anticipated, and even sitting here on a first date with him, I’m still unsure as to what this is or what it has the potential to be.
Before I even have a chance to analyze anything, Jamie makes his move and in doing so, tells me without words exactly how he sees this going.
Crushing his chest to mine, he corners me against the plush red velvet seats of the booth we’re in. His hand comes between us to cup my jaw, tilting it up so we’re eye to eye.
With our gazes locked, my heart beats faster and faster. There’s a loud buzz in my head, blocking out everything except the two of us. In all my dating life—before and after my marriage—I’ve never felt such a powerful magnetic pull toward a man. Not with my high school sweetheart. Not with my ex-husband who was the man I thought I’d grow old with.
My at-first-aggravating, constantly antagonizing, and now completely contradictory neighbor is the one to knock me off my feet—figuratively—and throw all of my preconceived assumptions about him out the window.
He’s taken me from not wanting or needing a man to dragging me headfirst into an all-consuming lust that has me wading in uncharted—yet not entirely unwanted—waters.
Something in my expression must change because his head stops mid-descent, his brows bunched together. “April, what just happened?”
I blink and stare at him. How can he read me so freaking well?
“Your face just went from soft and sexy to dazed and a little confused” He pulls back, resting his hands on my shoulders and giving me a little reassuring squeeze. “Whatever I did or said, please tell me.”
I don’t make him suffer because if this is to ever work, we have to communicate. I need to be able to tell him how I’m feeling. It’s something my therapist has drummed into me for the past two years Patrick left. “Do you ever think this seems too . . .”
His gaze warms, and my belly flutters. What is this man doing to me? He finishes my sentence. “Too . . . good? Right? Completely crazy but undeniable?”
“Easy,” I whisper. His brows lift, before he relaxes, his eyes crinkling as his lips curve up.
“Easy is good,” he says, like we’re not having a rather unexpected—yet seemingly normal—come-to-Jesus moment.
“We bicker.”
“Uh-huh.” His smile widens. “And if I don’t fuck this up, after tonight, we’ll have new, thoroughly enjoyable ways to make up when we do fight. Or I annoy you. Or—“
“Maybe you should quit while you’re ahead.”
