Title: Sweet Promise

Author: Jennifer Woodhull

Genre: Contemporary Romance

About Sweet Promise:

Sexy, British celebrity chef Lucas Nash is bringing the heat. I just hope I don't get burned.   When I won the Southern Baking Championships right out of high school, I never imagined how far that success would take me. The first season of my baking show was a hit, and I love what I do. I'm almost twenty-one, not a teenager anymore, and as it turns out, my agent thinks my girl-next-door image needs to grow up a little, so she sends me on an audition for a new show. When I find out that I'm auditioning to co-host with the sexy British celebrity chef I've admired for years, I can't believe my luck. Lucas has had a lot of trouble the past couple of years, though. A nasty divorce. Binge-drinking. Partying. We won't even talk about those pics of his impressive package that were splashed all over the tabloids. I'm supposed to be the solution to all Lucas' problems. Meeting him, though, is just the start of mine. When we set off on a European filming tour, sparks fly. Lucas is definitely bringing the heat. I just hope I don't get burned. Plenty of heart, sexy heat, and full of international destinations and some exciting twists and turns, Sweet Promise delivers a satisfying happily ever after between a sweet, Southern baker and a sexy, British alpha male chef. The first book in the Promise Series, this book can be read as a standalone romance - no surprise cliffhangers.

Exclusive Excerpt:

We got to Jerry’s, the Borough Market cafĂ© frequented by most of London’s food scene elite for the early morning shoot. The camera crew had been on-site for hours, getting some atmospheric shots before sunrise. The restaurant had been closed for us, which John had arranged, with only a few local chefs and neighborhood regulars were allowed inside for filming.   We walked into the kitchen to find the crew set up and filming. I sat on an empty counter while the makeup artist tended to my face and hair. Lucas had not acknowledged me when we walked in. Instead, he stood in the back, chat- ting and laughing with his chef buddies while the crew set up for the recipe shots.   When the set was ready, I joined Lucas behind the counter.   “Morning,” he said boisterously. “Good-mornin’,” I retorted coolly.   “Someone got up on the wrong side of the bed this morning,” he said playfully.   I just looked at him without saying another word. He shrugged as if unbothered by my demeanor. He started the recipe, and I tried to be charming on camera as I read my lines, but my sour mood was making me come across as stiff and unnatural.   We took a break, and I walked out through the alley door to stretch my legs and regroup. I put my palms on the back of my hips and paced back and forth. I was facing the street when I heard the restaurant door behind me open and shut. I knew who it was without turning to look.   “What do you want?” I didn’t care if he could tell I was annoyed.   “Whoa, what’s your problem today?” Lucas strode up to me and put his hands on his hips as he faced me.   “What’s my problem? You’re the one with the problem!” I crossed my arms in a huff and turned away from him. He threw his head back, laughing wildly.   “What are you laughin’ at?!” Growing angrier by the second, I spun to face him, hands on my hips, my brow furrowed.   “Georgia, you are absolutely precious, do you know that?” He towered over me and tried to take me by the shoulders, but I shrugged him off.   “Stop it!” I said, “You don’t get to do this!”   “What on earth are you talking about?” I tried to wrig- gle away from him, but he took my shoulders in his big hands and held me fast. His grip was firm, though he wasn’t hurting me.   “Georgia, why are you angry with me?”   “You sent John to get me this mornin’. You didn’t even acknowledge me when I came in.” My eyes were begin- ning to well up in spite of myself. Damn it! I hated, hated, hated it when I couldn’t control my emotions. He put his arms around me and tucked a curl behind my ear. “And you don’t know why,” he said. I shook my head indicating no, more confused than ever. My bottom lip pouted just a bit as I stared up at him, betraying all my hurt and disappointment. He gave me a look that flashed between concern and attraction.   “Oh, sweet Belle. What am I going to do with you?” He shook his head a little. “You don’t know what you did last night.” I looked into his eyes, not understanding. “You didn’t know what I was asking you to do when I asked you to come with me after the shoot, but you didn’t even seem to care. You just came because I needed you. You stayed with me, and listened to me…,” he put his hand up to my jaw, running his thumb across my lips, pulling the bottom one down slightly.   Despite my anger, his fingers left a trail of electricity behind them on my skin everywhere he touched me.   “You didn’t want anything in return. You held me as if… well, anyone who was looking on from the outside might have thought you really did… care for me on some level.” He said the last part carefully. He looked at me like he wanted to kiss me and run from me all at the same time. “So, you’re sayin’ I gave you what you needed, and you – what? You punish me for it? You shut me out? That’s what you do when someone cares for you?” He looked a little surprised at my choice of words. I was trying so hard not to show my hand, but it had to be evident that I was starting to have some sort of feelings for him.   He was gorgeous, of course, and any woman would be attracted to him. This, though, was something more than that. The time we had spent together on set, and when he had taken me to dinner and toured me around the city… little by little, he had shown me another side of himself. It was a side I didn’t know if anyone else saw, and that guy was someone I could definitely fall for.   Lucas put his face down, resting his forehead against mine and stood there for a moment. “I’ve never met any- one who excites and terrifies me so. When we get togeth- er…,” I started to object, and he put his thumb to my lips again, and this time, I didn’t argue. I knew the decision was already made and though the good-girl upbringing in me wanted to fight it, the woman I was becoming wanted to embrace it, and in the end, the woman was far stronger than even I had given her credit for.

“Wait, did you say I looked hot?” I ask.
My circulatory system has no idea where to concentrate the blood flow in my body right now. My brain is whirring with confused thoughts on what that means and why she’d say it. My cheeks are flushing, and I can feel the heat rising in them. At the same time, my dick twitches, and wants its fair share of the supply. Clair tiptoes up to kiss my cheek, and moves her arms around my neck.
“Of course you looked hot,” she says on a chuckle. “You’re the total package, Dex. Brilliant, sweet, and yes, hot. Tabitha’s going to love you. Why wouldn’t she?”
Why don’t you, Clair?

Exclusive Excerpt:

“She’s so fucking pretty,” Cole says, lolling his head back and forth against the headrest of my Tesla. The phrase irritates the crap out of me. I feel like I want to punch him. Not that I’ve ever punched anyone, but that’s what this feels like—like I want to commit violence against my friend for using such a pedestrian description for a creature as indescribably spectacular as Clair. “I don’t know though, man. She said she’d go out with me, but I’m not really sure she likes me.” Cole shakes his head. “It makes me kinda nervous. Usually, girls love me.” He turns to me and wriggles his eyebrows. “I mean, they really love me. It’s just…I don’t know. She’s different.” “She is different. She’s intelligent, kind, inquisitive, funny...She’s definitely not like anyone else I know.” My response is a knee-jerk reaction in defense of the woman that holds so much of my heart. I immediately regret it saying these things, though. Idiot. Why are you selling him on how great she is? He already got something I’ll never have—a date with her. “What sorta stuff should I talk to her about?” He asks. “What do you usually talk to your dates about?” “I usually say. ‘Hi. I’m a famous athlete. Also, I’m rich and have a huge cock. Let’s go to your place.’ Then they say okay, and we go to their place and fuck. If they’re good at it, I keep going back, and then we’re basically dating.” He shrugs. I pull into the driveway and the gate closes behind us. I drop my head to the steering wheel and let out a long, deep breath. “Cole, let me be clear,” I say carefully. “Clair is my friend. She’s my best friend.” “I thought I was your best friend.” “You’re my best male friend. She’s my best friend.” “So I’m not your best friend? Ouch, bro.” “You’re in the top two.” Only two, really, but that’s not really the point. “That’s not so bad, I guess. Hey, imagine if me and Sinclair got married someday. When you come to visit us, you’d get to see your two best friends at once!” He grins. I’m dying. Oxygen is no longer getting into my bloodstream and my organs are shutting down. It’s the only explanation I can think of for the hell in which I find myself trapped. “Again, Cole, let me be crystal clear. Do not treat Clair like some piece of ass. Don’t just sleep with her if you’re not serious about her.” My words are a caution. He looks at me and his expression is earnest. “I wouldn’t do that, Dexter. I’m not an asshole.” “I know you’re not an asshole. I just mean…” I blow out a breath and turn to him. “I know sometimes you date women and it’s just for fun. Clair is…she’s really important to me. Please don’t use her if you don’t see her as more than someone to go out with a couple of times, then move on from.” I hold his gaze, and he seems to get that I’m serious. “Dude…do you like her? Should I not have asked her out—were you going to make a move?” He asks. The weight of that question hangs in the air for a moment. My heartbeat is so loud, I’m sure any passerby could hear it. The blood courses through my veins with such fervor, I feel as if my arteries will burst. Should I have made a move? I don’t think she’d have been remotely interested in changing the dynamic of our relationship, but I was never brave enough to find out. After tonight, I feel, somehow, like I’ll never get the opportunity to know for sure. “We’re just friends. We’ve always been just friends,” I reply. It doesn’t answer his question, but the subtle ambiguity of my response is lost on my friend. “Okay, I was just making sure. Cause, dude,” he shakes his head. “She’s hot as hell. As long as I’m not stepping on your toes…I’m totally going for it.”

Exclusive Excerpt:

I walk down the hall, and turn the corner into my room to find, to my shock and dismay, a wall of dripping wet muscle standing at the foot of my bed, toweling himself off. I gasp, clutching my palm to the bare spot on my chest between the cups of my bra—thankfully, a t-shirt model that offers at least a little coverage. Hearing me, he turns, holding the towel just so that the most critical information is unavailable. “Hey, you’re home!” Noah takes three long strides toward me and leans forward to hug me. I put my palm out and it lands firmly in the middle of his perfect, muscular chest. “You’re naked! You can’t hug me naked! It’s weird!” I exclaim. “You’re naked too!” He argues, wrapping the towel around his waist and folding it into a not-very-secure-looking knot at the side. I silently will the knot to fail and expose the only bit of Noah Adler that I’ve never seen, but sadly I still have not developed telekinetic powers, so nothing happens. “There, better?” He asks, palms up. He doesn’t give me a chance to answer and instead wraps thick, muscular forearms and defined biceps around me as he pulls me into his sculpted torso. “I missed you!” He says, laying his cheek against the top of my head. I wrap my arms around his midsection and look up as I give him a squeeze, carefully jutting my ass out so my belly doesn’t make contact with what I imagine is a sizable and delicious member beneath the towel he’s barely wearing. “I missed you too. You should’ve come with us,” I say, closing my eyes as I do a happy dance on the inside because he came to see me after all. “I’m not a Bailey. No Bailey family adventures for me,” he laughs. “But I am going to need you to tell me every detail, Ariel.” I squirm away from him. “Well, that didn’t take long. I’m over missing you now.”

Exclusive Excerpt:

There are not enough words. I don’t mean that in a dramatic way as if there are not enough words to express something with which I’m momentarily frustrated. I mean there are often times when the optimum word for something simply does not exist. Fernweh is a German word that describes a feeling of homesickness for a place you’ve never visited before. The Swedish word, lagom, describes taking not too much nor too little, but just the right amount of something. To wear or use something for the very first time is expressed in Spanish by the word estrenar. I love words more than anything. I love hearing someone intelligent use the absolutely perfect, most fitting word at exactly the right moment. I love anagrams, crossword puzzles, and riddles. I love how they make me think about language and how people use it. Perhaps most of all though, I love awful puns—even dad-level terrible ones. I only know one person who loves language as much as I do, and he also happens to be the very person I can hardly wait to see. The Portuguese have a word for the sensation of nostalgia and longing for someone who is far away. Saudade. That’s what I’ve been experiencing since I moved to New York. I have saudade for Dexter Flynn, but that’s about to come to an end. *** I walk into The Tipsy Alchemist, an upscale hipster place Dexter chose to start our reunion evening. I visually scour the space, and am disappointed when I don’t see him. I walk the length of the bar and just as I’m about to turn and head back toward the front, a man leans in close behind me and says, “Excuse me, miss, but might I buy your first libation of the evening?” I turn, ready to tell the guy to get lost so I can call the person I want most in the world to see. When I turn around, though, I’m met with a pair of sweet, soulful brown eyes hiding behind tortoiseshell frames. My heart darts around my chest. I throw my arms around him so hard, I nearly send us both tumbling to the floor. “Dex!” I squeal, squeezing his neck. His arms wrap around me, and they’re far stronger than I remember. “It’s about time you came back,” he whispers into the side of my neck as he squeezes me tightly. “I’ve missed you, Clair.” I feel an instant wash of relief, being here in his arms. The feel of his cheek against mine and the smell of his aftershave trigger an eruption of happy memories. My brain floods with late night talks and board game marathons. My circuits overload with shared stories and supporting each other through tough times—with gushing over books and documentaries at the independent theatre. He has been such a huge part of my life for so long, and now, with him, I finally feel like I’m really home. When we finally break from our embrace, we both realize we’re standing in the highest traffic area of the bar, and the place is so packed we might be physically in danger from rowdy patrons clamoring for beer. “Come on,” he says, grabbing my hand. “I reserved us a booth.” He leads me through the trendy, dark-paneled space to the back where tiny, high-walled booths, are situated. This area of the bar is quieter than the rest, and the high walls of our booth offer some much-appreciated privacy. The booth to our immediate right houses what I can only assume is a bachelorette party judging by the volume and frequency of the word woo, coming from their direction. When the server arrives, I order a cocktail, and Dex orders a beer. “Miss, can I ask, the group of ladies in the booth next to us…is one of them a bachelorette, by chance?” He smirks in my direction. “Actually, yeah. Are they being too rowdy?” “Not at all. I was just curious,” he replies. I snicker and he winks in response. “It’s a cool story, actually,” the server pauses to tell us more detail. “She just got out of the military. She met her fiancĂ© while they were stationed together. He was injured, and she’s a nurse.” She puts her hand to her chest. “They fell in love while he recovered in her hospital.” Dex and I look at each other, and each make the universal face that any red-blooded human with feelings makes when seeing a baby, or a puppy, or hearing a sweet love story. “Aww,” we say in unison, laughing. “Would you please take them a bottle of Dom Perignon and put it on my tab? Anonymous, though, please…with thanks for her service, and her fiancĂ©’s,” Dex adds. “Wow, that’s really nice of you! Absolutely, I’ll take care of it,” the server replies. When she walks out of Dexter’s line of sight, she catches my eye and mouths the words, “Lucky you,” with a wink. It makes me smile unreasonably wide. Lucky me that such a kind, thoughtful, generous man is in my life and cares so much for me. Lucky me that he’s my friend. Unlucky me that he’s not more than just a friend. “That was very generous of you,” I tell him. “I had the good luck to meet an inventor whose work I really admire once at a party. Knowing I was new to success, he told me, “I always say, if you’ve got it, spread it around. Nobody likes a successful, stingy asshole.” I’ve always tried to remember that,” he says with a shrug. We toast to successful good guys. “You look amazing, Sinclair.” Dex is grinning at me, his brown eyes sparkling. I reach across the table and take both his hands in mine, giving them a squeeze. “You look amazing too. By the way,” I say, stifling a giggle. “I didn’t know I’d need tickets.” “Tickets? For…what, exactly?” He cocks an eyebrow up in question. “The gun show,” I reply, pointing to what I can see is a pronounced bicep on each arm. His cheeks flush with crimson as he looks down and away. The expression belongs to the shy, gangly guy I met in school, not the hunky, successful entrepreneur sitting across from me. “So, have you been hitting the gym, or did you invent some magical neurotransmitter that passively enhances muscle tissue?” I tease. “Because if you have, please sign me up as a test subject. Pilates is torture, but I like to eat far too much to ever give it up without some sort of alternative.” He chuckles. “I like to think of the fitness thing as my transformation to Dexter two-dot-oh. I have to say, I don’t hate that my efforts are producing noticeable results. I told you about my business partner Cole, right?” He asks sheepishly. “Your friend Cole, yes,” I reply, rolling my eyes. I think he still has a little trouble wrapping the high school part of his brain around being friends with a jock. “Yeah. Anyway, since he pitches for the Frontiersmen he knows all the best personal trainers. He convinced me to start working out with one he recommended. I go to the gym almost every day now. Turns out I’m not as unathletic as I thought I was.” He grins wide, pride evident on his face. “You certainly seem like you’re feeling pretty good,” I reply. I stand up enough to reach across and squeeze his bicep. “Yep, feeling pretty darn good to me.” He smiles, then he shakes his head and chuckles. “I really do feel good…and even better now.” Something flashes briefly in his chocolate-brown eyes, then he smirks. “I’m just so happy you’re back, Clair.” Clair. No one but him calls me that. The way he says it is familiar and makes me feel special that he has a nickname just for me. It’s the same way I call him Dex. Those terms of endearment are just for us, like they’re special words all our own. By the time we finish the drinks the server brings over my stomach is growling, so we head down the street to a Mexican place that has always been one of my favorites. As we walk the four or five blocks to the restaurant, a group of girls walking the opposite direction toward us are all checking Dex out as they pass. I turn to look over my shoulder and see them all looking back, whispering and giggling. When I look over at him, he seems oblivious. And this is why he has trouble finding the right girl. He has no clue when a woman is into him. I bump his shoulder with mine. “They were checking you out,” I say with a smirk. “Who?” “That group of girls that walked by. They were cute, too.” He rolls his eyes. “So, not seeing anyone?” I ask. “Not at the moment.” He lets out a sigh. “Maybe I’m too picky.” “Maybe you are,” I agree. And that’s the other reason he can’t find the right girl. He has never fully explained the criteria with me, but he seems never to have found a girl that checks all the boxes on the list of Dex requirements for the perfect girl. Someone as genuine and kind, as smart and as funny as Dex deserves someone wonderful, though—someone who can see him for everything he is. I have tried to resign myself to the fact that I’m not that girl in his eyes. I only hope that one day he finds her, and she deserves him. That brings me to another word that should exist, but doesn’t. There should be a word for enjoying something you have, but still wishing it was much, much more.
