Shane (Evil Dead MC, #12) by Nicole James

Title: SHANE
Series: Evil Dead MC #12
Author: Nicole James
Genre: Enemies to Lovers Romance
Release Date: September 30, 2021

BLURB

Shane--

I live at the end of this dark, deserted, dead-end street for a reason.
I don't like neighbors, and I'm not into kids. So I'm pissed to learn the vacant house across the street just got rented.

When a child comes snooping around my house, I'm forced to do the last thing I want to do--meet my new neighbor. When I go to return the kid to her side of the street, I come face-to-face with one pissed off mama bear and the hottest chick I've ever laid eyes on--and that's saying a lot.

Suddenly I'm all about being neighborly; the only problem is she wants nothing to do with me or my MC life.

Can I blame her?

Guess I'll just have to change her mind.

When problems start piling up at the club, I can't help wondering if she's to blame. I've never had a woman twist me in knots like this one.

My life is simple and uncomplicated--I live for my club.

I have a feeling she's going to complicate everything.

Brianna--

When I see the motorcycles pull in across the street, I suddenly realize why this rental house was so cheap and the leasing agent so eager to unload it.

But when you're running for your life, a dead-end street with few neighbors sounds perfect.

One look at the badass biker next door is all it takes for me to know I want nothing to do with trouble like him.

He's the worst kind of dangerous--a man built like a Chippendale dancer who radiates confidence and fearlessness. I'm sure there's not a situation he couldn't handle or a room he wouldn't own just by walking through the door.

He's the kind of man men fear and women want to tame---the kind of man my mother warned me about.

I've got secrets, and he wants to know every one of them.

I have a feeling he's going to complicate everything.

EXCERPT

“We’ve got time to work the deal out, Lou. I don’t want to be rushed.”
“This is a fast-paced business, doll. You of all people should know that. Look at how fast your friend Rory shot to fame.” He snaps his fingers. “That’s how quick Reece Jones can find another act. Don’t think you’re not replaceable, kid.”
I’ve followed my sister’s career enough to know she just finished a sell-out tour across Europe. So I’m not falling for Lou’s bullshit.
I give him a don’t make me laugh smile, which only pisses him off more. I almost laugh. It’s fun to watch him think he can throw his bluster around, but it doesn’t faze me. I can’t stand a man who tries to control me.
He shoves to his feet and paces a few steps, then grabs the unlit cigar from his mouth and jabs it at me. “Don’t blow this deal, Charlotte. I worked hard to get it for you.”
I roll my eyes. “I’m the one working hard, Lou.”
His eyes blaze. The chime of the hotel suite’s doorbell interrupts us. Yes, it has a doorbell. How freaking cool is that?
Quincy moves to answer it as Lou and I swivel our heads to see who it is.
My bodyguard peers through the peephole, then turns back and murmurs, “It’s the CEO of the hotel.”
My brows slash down as my eyes flick to Lou.
“Lane Grantham. He’s worth billions, so fucking be nice.”
I take offense to his comment. “I’m always nice.”
Quincy opens the door. “Mr. Grantham.”
“Good evening. Is Miss Justice available?”
“Yes, sir. Come in.” Quincy steps back and in strolls the most gorgeous man I’ve ever laid eyes on.
He’s tall and blond, with a distinct Nordic look about him. If the role wasn’t already taken, he’d make a great Thor, except his hair is shorter in a cut that probably cost more than my bar made last week. My eyes slide down over his body in the magnificent suit that fits him exquisitely.
I stand, and our eyes connect. Good God, this man is beautiful.
He extends his hand, and I notice the Tag Heuer watch on his right wrist. So he’s a leftie. Interesting. I extend mine, and the moment we touch, something zings through my body, and I don’t want him to let go.
“Miss Justice, a pleasure to finally meet you. Lane Grantham of Grantham Hotels. I hope you’re enjoying your stay with us.”
He’s got a British accent! Could he get any better? I smile. “Yes, very much so. The hotel is lovely.”
“The staff has been taking care of you?” He still has a hold of my hand as I stare dreamily into his crystal blue eyes.
“Yes, they’ve been wonderful.”
“Excellent.” He finally lets go, and Lou extends his hand.
“Lou Crawford, Miss Justice’s manager.”
“How do you do.” They shake.
Lane Grantham shoves his hands in his pockets, and the gesture pulls the fabric of the expensive suit, showing off his muscled physique even more.
“I wondered if I might have a moment of your time, Miss Justice.”
“Please, call me Charlotte. And yes, of course.” I look to Lou and Quincy. “If you’ll excuse us, gentlemen.”
“I’ll be right outside if you need me, Miss Justice.” Quincy gestures to the door.
“Thank you.”
Lou looks a little put out at being asked to leave, so I give him a nudge. “Lou, I’ll speak to you later. We’ll discuss the contract then.”
“Nice meeting you, Grantham,” he finally says.
Lane Grantham just smiles and lifts his chin in acknowledgement. “Crawford.”
Lou turns to me with a penetrating stare. “Don’t forget you have rehearsals with the band tomorrow at eight a.m. sharp.”
“Ah, yes,” Grantham says. “That’ll be in our Retro Lounge. We’ve done an excellent job, I think, on the sound buffering. I hope it’s up to your standards, Miss Justice.”
“I’m sure it will be fine.” I turn to my manager. “Goodnight, Lou.”
He grunts. “Don’t be late.”
After they exit, I gesture toward the small bar. “Can I get you anything?”
“Allow me.” He moves to it and puts ice in a glass. “What would you like?”
“I’ll have what you’re having,” I say, watching him fill the glass with bourbon. I sit back on the pretty white sofa, tucking one leg under me and crossing the other one over, bouncing my pretty Jimmy Choo shoe, it’s rhinestones sparkling in the lamplight. Outside the floor to ceiling windows, the lights of the Las Vegas Strip glitter as night falls.
Lane Grantham carries my drink to me and holds it out.
I take it. “Thank you.”
He clinks his glass to mine. “Cheers.”
I smile and take a sip as he sits next to me, throwing an arm over the back of the sofa.
“I was wondering if you’d do me the honor of having dinner with me in my suite tonight.”
I’m taken aback by his offer, excitement charging through me, but then I remember I’m playing the part of my sister, a woman who probably has men lining up to date her, so I play it cool. I take a sip of my drink and smile. “I’m not sure that’s wise. I wouldn’t want to give the wrong impression.”
“And what impression is that?”
“That I’m available.”
“Ah. So you’re in a relationship, then?”
“No. It’s not that.”
He cocks his head, the corner of his incredibly sexy mouth pulling up. “Then is this just you playing hard to get?”
I chuckle. “I’m not playing hard to get; I’m impossible to get, believe me. Don’t waste your time.”
“Well, it is my time. Guess I’ll do what I want with it, if you don’t mind.”
I arch a brow. “I’m not that girl, you know.”
“And what girl is that?”
“The kind that is super impressed by money and all its trappings.”
He sips his own drink. “Really? Those Jimmy Choo’s say otherwise.”
I look down at my foot, admiring the gorgeous shoe. “I like pretty shoes. Sue me.”
He grins. “And I like fast cars, good bourbon, and women in pretty shoes. See, we’re made for each other.”
“Hardly.”
His eyes move over me. “You are not what I expected.”
“And what did you expect?”
“Someone easier to impress, I suppose.”
“Oh, I’m impressed. You’re a very attractive man, obviously successful, and the British accent is to die for.”
“The accent does work on most of you American women. I’m feeling there’s a but in there somewhere.”
“But I really won’t be in town long. I just don’t see the point in starting up anything.”
“Starting up anything? My, how you yanks talk. I was just offering dinner,” he says with a killer grin.
“Oh, and here I thought you were offering much more.”
He laughs, almost embarrassed.
“Have I made you blush, Mr. Grantham?”
“Not at all. And please, call me Lane.”
“Lane.”
“Say that again.”
“What? Your name?”
“Yes. It sounds nice when you say it.”
“Must be my crass American accent.”
He laughs again. “Hardly. More the melodic soft quality of your voice.”
“Have you heard me sing, Lane?”
“I can’t say I’ve had the pleasure.”
“Really? And yet you booked me as your premiere act.”
“That would be my sister. I believe she saw you in London.”
“Is that home? London.”
“Have dinner with me, and I’ll tell you all about myself.”
“You Brits are persistent.”
“And you Yanks are stubborn.”
I chuckle. “True, that.”
He sips his drink and stares out the window, putting aside pressuring me for a moment to take in the lights of the Strip. “It really is a garish amount of flashing lights and neon, isn’t it?”
“Definitely. The desert and mountains outside of town hold the real beauty around here.”
That draws his eyes to me. “You sound like you know it.”
“I do.”
“Perhaps you’ll show it to me. I must admit I haven’t gotten outside the Strip since I’ve been here working toward opening the hotel.”
“Perhaps I will.”
“So, you’ll have dinner with me tonight then? We could discuss this tour of the mountains and desert further.”
Try as I may, I can’t resist him. “I suppose since I do have to eat, it might as well be with an attractive dinner companion.”
His grin gets bigger, and he clinks his glass to mine. “To attractive dinner companions then.”
He downs his drink and stands. “Penthouse suite.” He glances at his watch. “Say in an hour?”
I stand to walk him to the door. “Perfect. Shall I dress up?”
“Please do. Though you’re beautiful just as you are.”
“Nice meeting you, Lane.”
“The pleasure is all mine, Charlotte.”
After he leaves, I close the door, put my back to it, and practically melt down the smooth wood. I’m giddy inside, and I dash to the bedroom to see what amazing dress I can find in my sister’s wardrobe.

EXCERPT

“Scarlett?” I hear a deep voice behind me, and turn to see the Evil Dead Vice President staring at me. He’s chewing on a red drink straw. I nod, and he smiles, pulling it out, his white teeth flashing.
“Yes?” I lift my chin, holding his eyes, but quaking on the inside.
“You got a note comin’ due. You gonna be able to pay it?”
A note? What is he talking about? Please God; tell me my sister didn’t borrow money from these low-fife, loan-sharking bikers. I swallow. “My bar is none of your business.”
“Now, seeing as how it was the Dead that lent you that money, yeah, it is my business. If you haven’t got it, we can make you an offer for the bar; take it out of that. Win-win for both of us.”
“I’m not interested in selling.” I move to sweep past him, but he grabs my upper arm.
“Longer you wait, doll, the lower that offer’s gonna get.”
I’ve dealt with men who think they can intimidate to get what they want. I’ve learned it’s best to show them you won’t let them steamroll over you. I yank my arm free and lift a chin toward his patch.
“Your club wants to buy my bar, send in your President. I don’t dick around with peons.”
He lifts a brow. “Watch your mouth, bitch.”
I lift a brow right back. “You don’t like my mouth, I’m sure there are other places you can drink.”
His friend chuckles. “Guess she told you, Trick.”
“That ain’t the way you spoke to me when you came askin’ for a loan, babe.”
I ignore him and stride off toward the back of the bar. I enter the office, and the minute I’m out of sight, I close the door and lock it. Then dash behind the desk and squat down, fumbling with opening the safe. I grab the gun, and lock the safe again. Shoving it in the back of my jeans, I move around the desk, hoping those assholes aren’t right this second robbing the bar.
I take a deep breath, open the door and hear their Harleys rumble to life. I come out and see their barstools are now empty. Moving behind the bar, I go to the end where they were sitting and stare at their empty shot glasses and bottles.
“Did they pay for their drinks?” I watch them pull away with a thundering roar. When no one answers, I turn to look over my shoulder and see Pete staring at the gun jammed against the small of my back.
“Damn, Scarlett. Were you planning on shooting them?”
“I just don’t like men who think they can push a woman around.” I glance down and see a card laying on the bar. I pick it up. It says Evil Dead MC, Nevada. Trick, Vice President. There’s a phone number. Does this guy really have the audacity to think I’m going to call him? I flip it over. On the back is scrawled, Five thousand dollars due the first of the month.
I smirk. I’ve got more than that sitting in my checking account right now. Then my face falls. I don’t have my checkbook or bankcard, or even my IDs. Scarlett has all that. As far as anyone knows, I’m Scarlett, and she’s me. I wonder if even now she’s draining my bank account. Of course she doesn’t have my pin number, but she’s smart enough to get around that if she wanted to, and if she’s desperate to save her bar, she’ll want to.
“Scarlett?”
I turn toward the voice.
“You shouldn’t have disrespected them.” Pete looks worried.
“I didn’t disrespect them.”
“You called them peons.”
Oh, right. That. “Well, they won’t kill me over that, will they?” At least not until they get what they’re after, which is either five grand or Badlands; though why they’d want it, I’m clueless. From the situation Scarlett is in, she can’t be making much money here.
I glance to Pete, but he just lifts his brows and walks away. Soon the bar empties and we close up. I wave good-bye to Shelly and Pete, and walk back to the little white house behind the bar.
The elevation here in Cold Creek is higher than Vegas, therefore its much cooler. That combined with the fact it’s always cold in the desert at night, has a chill in the air.
As I walk past Scarlett’s pickup parked close enough that the house’s porch light shines on it, I see something on the windshield.
I stare at it a moment before I realize its something written in black marker—a big heart. And in the middle are the words YOU’RE MINE.

She’s a favor, a debt I owe—that’s all.

Kami—

I’m no longer the little girl he once knew, one who believed in fairy tales.
And he’s no longer the white knight I believed him to be.
How can he be when he shows up on a black Harley wearing leather and biker boots?
I didn’t want this, but the decision is out of my control.
Now I’m his.

I have to remember this is only temporary.
I can’t let the way his predatory gaze sets fire to my body fool me.
Because I’m just a debt he’s paying, and I can’t risk my heart by letting myself believe it can ever be more.

Not with a man like him.
He’s dangerous, and only focused on one thing—securing his place with the baddest MC in town.

He’s no longer the boy I remember when I was nine years old—the one who helped me when I got stuck in a tree. The one who climbed up, wrapped an arm around me and hauled me down to safety, calling me short cake.
He was my savior then—a childish crush—but we’re no longer children.

Now he’s a stranger.

Now he’s my husband.

Saint—

I took her with me because I had no choice.
If I owe a debt, I pay it.

I owed her mother a favor, but I never expected the repayment to include marrying her seventeen-year-old daughter. When she begs me to take Kami with me to protect her, do I have a choice?

Besides, it’s only temporary. Just until she turns eighteen.

Only 90 days to go.

I can resist her that long, right?

EXCERPT

He turns back to me and stills, his eyes sweeping over me in the dim light. I’m suddenly acutely aware of the fact that I’m in his shirt, my bare legs exposed and my braless breasts outlined.
“You look about seventeen.”
“I’m not.”
His gaze lifts to mine as my meaning sinks in.
“That chair has to be uncomfortable.”
“It is,” he admits.
I lift my hand toward him, my invitation clear.
He hesitates. “We do this, it’s only temporary, understand? I’m not looking for anything more.”
“I understand. I’m not either,” I lie. Whether he reads the lie in my eyes or not, he prowls toward me and backs me to the small peninsula that sticks out from the kitchenette. The countertop presses into my back.
His gaze is intent and filled with male hunger. My belly tightens as he braces his hands on the counter on either side of me, bracketing me in. My eyes drop to his chest, and I draw in a ragged breath.
“Look at me, Lola.”
I lift my gaze to his emerald orbs, and I’m lost in them.
“You sure about this?”
My pulse skitters, and I’m mesmerized by his penetrating stare. There are barely a few inches between our bodies, and that space crackles with the physical energy arcing between us.
He hasn’t even touched me, and already my body is humming with need.
He cocks his head, and studies me. “If you’re having second thoughts, better speak up now. Because if you want the truth, once we move to that bed, I’m going to be all over you.”
Holy crap, his words turn me on. A jolt shoots through my body, and I suck in a breath. “I want that.”
Slowly, his head lowers, and I hold perfectly still as he brushes his lips over mine. Our mouths are the only place we’re touching, and its erotic as hell. I can feel my entire body vibrating with awareness of how close we are. Finally, I break the standoff and wrap my arms around his neck.
His hands close around my waist and he lifts me onto the counter, prying my knees apart and stepping between them. His thick arms wrap around me to yank me flush against him, and I gasp, loving the way he’s manhandling me.
“Look at me.”
I shyly stare up, meeting his warm gaze.
“I need to know you understand who I am—what I am. I’m a Nomad, Lola.”
“I get that.”
“You’re gorgeous, you know that, don’t you? I’m sure you’ve got your choice of patches, if that’s what you’re after.”
“I’m not.”
He suddenly grins. “Every warning bell in my head is going off right now, telling me you’re probably more trouble than I need, girl. Probably gonna steal my heart, too, if I let you. But I really want you; warning bells be damned.”
I meet him halfway as his mouth descends on mine. Instantly, need jolts through me, like nothing I’ve ever felt before. My arms steal around him, and I’m just as determined to ignore those same warning bells I hear myself.
His kiss is like no other; his firm, knowing touch, his tall body and broad shoulders, they all work on me like no man I’ve ever known. Everything is different with him. Everything feels right, like this is fate and destined. Things I’ve never believed in.
It’s as if he’s everything I’ve been waiting for all these lonely years.
As he pulls back and stares down at me, his big chest rising and falling faster than before, I know he feels it too. That something is special here, but he doesn’t want to believe in it.
He brushes my hair back from my forehead, staring into my gaze. “I see it in your eyes. Don’t go getting attached, girl. I never stay in one place for long.”
“I won’t.”
“I just want to be up front with you.”
“No expectations. I’ve got it.”
“Doesn’t mean I won’t come back around. Doesn’t mean we won’t see each other again. We will. I guarantee it.”
“No. We made a deal. No guarantees, no promises, no expectations. Just now, just this moment.”
He grins at my reply. “Damn. It’s like you were made for me.”
