Title: Make Me Fall

Author: Ember Leigh

Genre: Contemporary Romance

About Make Me Fall:

There’s one rule in my family.   Stay away from the Daly brothers. We were raised to know them as users. Manipulators. But I only ever saw Connor as the enigmatic senior hottie who dropped into fifth period to teach us about the perils of drunk driving.   So when my first big girl job out of college ends up with us working at the same company, it’s heart throb city all over again. Except he’s way ahead of the game. Successful, talented, put together. I’m just a frumpy twenty-something in a quarter life crisis who doesn’t know a glue stick from a makeup highlighter.   He would never want me, even though he’s all I ever wanted in secret. So when we cross paths one night at the bar and one drink leads to another, he slaps me with an offer I can’t refuse.   Accompany him back to Bayshore, flight included.   Only stipulation? Pose as his girlfriend.   Our families will flip, but I’m not strong enough to say no to those baby blues, especially if it means I’ll have a chance to spend the next two weeks with my adolescent heart throb.

“I think we should kiss.”
The words sear through me like a surprise lightning bolt. Kiss?
Kiss Connor? The very thing I’ve been fantasizing about doing since junior year of high school?
Abso-fucking-lutely.
“To prove what a special couple we are,” he murmurs,
and squeezes the top of my waist. To anybody else, it looks a
s if he’s murmuring sweet nothings. I giggle, rolling my lips inward.
I angle myself toward him more, finally daring to meet his gaze.
“Yeah?” I ask, nudging him with my shoulder.
From this angle, he’s more gorgeous than ever.
The corners of his eyes crinkle as he looks down at me.
He wets his bottom lip, that leather and spice not only
filling my senses but drowning me completely. I’m a goner.
Send for the rescue boat. The S. S. Kinsley is headed to the bottom of Lake Erie.
His eyes search my face for a moment, and then
he bridges the distance between our mouths,
his lips landing against mine so softly, yet so intensely,
that I have to silence a gasp. I grip the side of his arm,
pushing up onto my tiptoes so that we can mash our lips together even more.
Because now that I’ve had a taste of him? I need all of him.
He smiles through the kiss, which leads to a second kiss,
which leads to a very noticeable damp surge in my panties.
My fingers dig into the sleeve of his white button-down.
“Jeez, guys,” Grayson interjects a moment later,
as we’re rounding the corner into kiss number three. “Get a room.”
Connor breaks away, and I collapse against him.
My heart is pounding between my ears, and I’m not certain I’ll be
able to walk out of the backyard on my own two feet.
Three kisses with Connor is all it takes to undo me. And we didn’t even use our tongues.
“We do have a room, you know,” he says to me,
loud enough for the others to hear. I laugh weakly,
because of course he’s saying it for them.
He doesn’t mean it. Even though the fake kisses
he gave me easily win first, second, and third place in the history of every kiss of my lifetime.

“Sorry, guys.” I give his cousins an apologetic smile,
but I’m not sorry at all. God, it’s nice to play the
coy girlfriend part. Connor doesn’t move his arm
from my waist, and he effortlessly rejoins
the conversation about everybody’s current work situation.
I can barely focus on what they’re saying. I couldn’t care less, actually.
I just want Connor to kiss me again.
But he doesn’t, and the conversation whiles on.
Later, while Grayson is explaining his firm’s city of
origin to his cousins and I’ve more than zoned out, I catch
Connor’s intense gaze. He’s looking at me like he’s gobbling
me up. Like he doesn’t just tolerate me, but that he actually likes me. Maybe even wants me.
Or maybe I’m so starved for affection
that I’ll see it anywhere.
At any rate, the lines are blurring. My panties are
damp from wanting him, and I might not ever recover from those kisses.
If this is what posing as Connor’s girlfriend is going to
be like for the next week and a half, I might not make it out of Bayshore alive.

Exclusive Excerpt:

We make it through dinner alive, even though my parents acted as if she wasn’t there the entire time. I probably need to up her compensation for agreeing to this. Even I couldn’t have predicted this brutally frigid reception. I thought Dad would put on a forced friendly front and complain viciously to Mom behind closed doors, like any normal American. Once dinner is over and my brothers have completed their jousting match over who gets which bedroom, I am feeling far superior, since I have been the most laidback about the bedroom thing. I grin my way up the staircase, Kinsley trailing behind me. We head for the last bedroom, which has a sunrise-facing window I’ve always particularly liked. I push open the door, and the cozy guest bedroom greets us. In front of us, the plush queen-size bed is neatly made, the head of the white comforter pulled back. Beckoning us into its comfort. Something is off, but I can’t tell what. Kinsley speaks. “I thought you said there were two twin beds?” Shit. That’s what it is. I roll our luggage into the bedroom and shut the door. “There were.” I frown. “In my old room.” She’s gnawing at the inside of her lip, glancing between me and the bed. “Will this be okay?” I ask, suddenly worried I’ve overstepped our tenuous boundaries. Clutching her hand in a vice grip for the duration of dinner? Fine. But sharing a bed, even platonically? This could be the deal breaker. “I can sleep on top of the covers, if you want, or bring a sleeping bag—” “It’ll be fine.” She waves her hand dismissively and heads for the bed. “I wouldn’t want you to sleep on the floor on my account.” I smirk, unable to pass up the chance for a joke. “I didn’t mean I would be sleeping on the floor.” She narrows her eyes, a laugh bursting out of her. “I can’t imagine you’d drag me two thousand miles for that encounter with your parents and make me sleep on the floor.” My laughter turns into a sigh. “Sorry about that. I didn’t think it would be that bad. Honestly.” She shrugs again, picking at something on the comforter. “I know our parents always had issues. I just didn’t think it would make them act like that.” I ease onto the bed next to her, even though I could have sat anywhere else in the room: the other side of the bed, in the chair facing the bathroom, or hell, even on the gray berber carpet. But being near Kinsley has already burrowed in like a habit. Even though no eyes are watching us. “Do you think your parents would act the same?” “I don’t know. Maybe. It’s weird to think that we’re being the adults here.” Regret crashes through me. Am I being the adult here? My reasons for bringing Kinsley are hardly noble. Sure, I bought her plane ticket. But also, I needed her presence to get back at a small handful of people. And that seems like the opposite of mature. “Listen. We’re gonna have a great time,” I say, channeling my hopes into words. “My parents will loosen up. But we won’t even be here much. We can go do whatever we want. This is vacay, baby.” She sends me a curious glance. “Whatever we want, huh?” I can’t help it. My mind goes straight to sex. I’m 100 percent man and 50 percent beast. Which makes for some sort of mathematically impossible species. My gaze drops to her lips. God, she’s got great lips. Maybe we can slightly expand the list of Bayshore-relationship activities. “Absolutely.” The side of my body closest to hers is getting hot from curiosity. She’s not my type—not even a little. But I’m still wondering what it might be like to go there with her. “You know I brought twenty books with me, right?” she says. And like that, the fire under my skin goes out. Not because books aren’t sexy—trust me, they are—but because I realize she wasn’t heading down the same kiss-curious path I was. She meant books. Because she is not a man beast who would already have her half undressed if she’d allow it. “Like I said.” I push to my feet. More distance is probably wise. Sitting that close to her is messing with my head. “We’re creating this vacay. And if that includes starting your own book club, so be it.” She smiles up at me, and there is something so pure and innocent in her gaze that my breath catches. The sunlight filtering into the room catches on her hair, highlighting the strawberry undertones there. Between her glistening braid and her sweet smiles, I decide in that moment that she is the definition of a sunbeam. A sunbeam with slightly-too-large ears. I already know that Kinsley is my humor and mental equal after one sad night at the bar and an entire day of travel together. She can lob a joke as far as I can. And I’m realizing that although we’re just pretending here in Bayshore, I actually want to spend time with her.

“Come back to Bayshore with me.” The suggestion flies out of my mouth, aided by alcohol. “I’ll buy your ticket.” She narrows her eyes with a look that says, come on. “You’re not buying my ticket.” “Why not? I’ve got the money.” “But you—” She sputters a little. “We don’t even—” I lean forward, and my fingers brush her wrist. She clamps her mouth shut, and her gaze falls to her hand. “We’re Bayshore buddies.” I squeeze her wrist gently, and she bites her bottom lip. “We’re from the same place. We’ve got a bond that nobody else has because of it.” I’m that level of drunk where I will spew any bullshit necessary to get what I need. And I can tell this homely little lass will eat it up. She’s got eyes the color of a summer sky bordered with periwinkle, and there’s something sharp and hot in her gaze that makes my forearms prickle. I can’t tell if she’s naïve or just one of those conscious virgins. “A bond, huh?” Her voice is husky in her disbelief, which is warranted. We’ve barely spoken ten words to each other the entire lifetime we’ve known each other. And something in her laugh makes my memory spark. Kinsley. That’s her name. I remember it because Tamara always made fun of her for it. Tamara, my ex. Tamara, Kinsley’s boss. Tamara had a problem with Kinsley from day one, which is the other perfect dimension to this arrangement. Tamara will lose her shit if I take Kinsley back to Bayshore with me. “Kinsley. When’s the last time you went back?” I ask, scooting my chair closer. She’s nibbling on her bottom lip again. “It’s been a few years…” “Way too long. Let me treat you. I’m going anyway, and I could use the company on the plane.” She’s tugging at the damp bits of the napkin beneath her glass. “When would you leave?” “In a few days.” She shakes her head. “I can’t take a two-week vacation like that. That requires planning. I—” “Our company is permissive with personal days. If you can use a few of those and rack up the vacation days on the backend, you’re golden.” She sighs, drumming her fingers against the bar like she’s really thinking about it. Then she rubs at her face, and lets out a little squeal into her palms. “Okay! This is crazy, but I’ll do it.” I squeeze her shoulder, but this time I notice the feminine curves beneath her silky shirt. The narrow width of her shoulder blade, which begs for a slouchy shirt or the slipping strap of lingerie. Heat prickles through me, but I know this is the alcohol speaking. Kinsley and I, we don’t run in the same circles. It’s the type of truth that simmers on the backburner, always burbling and true. Which makes my next proposition even more outrageous, but all the more doable. “I just wonder if you could do me one small favor.” I try to keep my voice light. Casual, even. Like I’m not about to ask the most absurd thing ever. “I need you to pose as my girlfriend while we’re home.” Her hesitant blue eyes find mine for a split second. Serious question marks brew there, a witch’s cauldron of confusion. “What?” “I know it sounds crazy,” I insist. “It would really help me out. My family…they…” Even more important than getting home is proving to my family that I live up to their absurd standards of achievement. Especially my overbearing father and too-successful older brothers. The only trump card in my euchre hand right now is the fact that I’ll be the one with a girlfriend. “Why wouldn’t you take your girlfriend?” I stare at her dumbly for a moment, getting lost in the delicate planes of her face. Freckles splash across her cheeks, and she’s got a sun kissed quality that makes her look younger than she probably is. “Tamara?” she prompts, when I’ve remained silent too long. “Oh,” I blurt. “Right. Well, she’s not my girlfriend. That’s why I’m not taking her.” My chest tightens slightly, but not because I miss her. Tamara and I had the Urban Dictionary definition of a toxic relationship. “But haven’t you guys been together forever?” Kinsley asks. “We broke up a while ago,” I tell her. And if you count the moment I emotionally disengaged from her, it was even longer. Kinsley softens. She turns the empty tumbler of RumChata back and forth in her hands. If she goes along with this, I will give her so much more than a plane ticket to see her family. I will construct a shrine in her likeness and kiss its feet on the daily. Because she’s helping me complete the trifecta. Get back at Tamara, prove to my family I’m better than I actually am, and last but not least, piss off my dad. Because Kinsley isn’t just any ol’ Bayshore buddy. Oh no. She’s Kinsley Cabana. The daughter of my mom’s ex-best friend and dad’s most hated enemy in the world. Sure, I want to look good compared to my brothers. But what’s a competition without ruffling some feathers? Bringing Kinsley home isn’t just going to ruffle them. It’s going to burn them to a crisp.
