The Easy Part (perfect for you, #3) by Amanda Siegrist

Title: The Easy Part
Series: perfect for you #3
Author: Amanda Siegrist
Genre: Contemporary Romance
Release Date: September 21, 2021

BLURB

The Agreement: Pretend to be her fake fiancé to placate her overbearing, selfish mother.
Timeframe: Five days.

Brick likes things carefree and simple, especially after the falling out with his brother. The moment Jezebelle walks into his bar looking sad and troubled, he’s determined to do anything to turn her frown upside down. Even if that requires posing as her fake fiancĂ© to get her bossy mother off her back. Pretending to love her will be the easy part—because he does. Walking away will be futile. But he doesn’t see a way he can keep Jezebelle for real, not when her mother’s diabolical ways prove she can make his life more than just complicated, but downright impossible.

Jezebelle can’t believe her luck when Brick hatches this crazy plan. One, because she’s always had a secret crush on him, and any reason to get closer to him makes her heart stutter with anticipation. Two, because it might actually work to keep her mother at bay. Of course, her mother isn’t a woman who takes no for an answer. She’ll do everything in her power to get her way. The last thing she wants is for Brick to get hurt. The best thing she can do is walk away and forget he ever held her heart. If only it were that easy.

Warning: This is not a full romcom. While it has moments of humor, it also has a twist of angst. Okay, now you can dive in, you’re prepared!

“Tomorrow we plan on visiting a few art galleries. I’ll pick you up at nine for breakfast.”
Her mother did not say it as a request, which didn’t surprise her. She knew her mother was visiting for the next five days and she’d be required to spend time with her. Two days down, only three to go.
“Brick and I will be ready.”
Her mother pursed her lips, tight and hard. “I’m sure Brick has other things he needs to attend to.”
“Mother, he—”
“Actually, I do,” Brick said, cutting off her rebuttal. She whipped her head sharply in his direction, confusion filtering in. He must’ve sensed her unease because he kissed her on the lips. “But I’ll meet up with you for lunch.”
“That’s not necessary,” her mother replied.
He turned his head with slow precision toward her mother. “But I insist. I look forward to getting to know you better. We will be family soon, after all.”
Jezebelle had to press her lips together to keep from laughing. Not by the thought of Brick joining her family, but how so pleasantly he said the words as if he adored her mother.
“How soon?” her mother asked with a heavy glint in her eye as if daring Brick to keep the lie going. Her mother didn’t know their engagement was fake, but she also knew her mother would do everything in her power to stop it.
How did one stop a fake engagement? Jezebelle almost chuckled out loud again. The idea was so laughable.
“If I could marry your daughter right here, right now, I would.” His eyes sought hers. “Every moment with her is more than I could ask for. She’s beautiful and smart, and I can’t wait to spend the rest of my life with her.”
The way he spoke, his eyes sparkling with love—could it be true?—his lips curved in delight, she believed him. That what was between them was real and everything would work out in the end.
If only it were that easy.
If only it were that real.

A slow, seductive smile grew right before he tossed her onto the bed. She giggled, her eyes filled with pleasurable delight and a bit of surprise.
Then he joined her on the bed, covering her with his body.
“You threw me,” she said with a teasing twinkle in her eyes.
He couldn’t even say why he tossed—definitely didn’t throw—her on to the bed. Maybe to get a reaction out of her. Sometimes, it was hard to get the kind of reactions he wanted from her. It was like pulling teeth, hard and tumultuous.
“Did I?” His lips found her neck, making a delicious path up to her ear. “What can I say? I'm excited to get you in this bed.”
Then he pushed into her, so she could feel how hard his cock was, and how damn excited he was that this was finally happening.
Her arms wound around his neck, pulling him closer. Then their lips matched, more pleasure exploding throughout his body as their tongues mingled and their bodies moved to a beautiful rhythm.
But they had too many clothes between them.
“I need you naked, now,” he said between kisses as one of his hands wove down toward the edge of the silky shirt she wore.
She pushed on his chest, giggling. “Don’t even think about pulling up on this shirt. I don’t want to have to fix any of the buttons with your eagerness.”
He winked, pretty sure he would’ve popped a button or two pulling her shirt up and over her head, as she tried to sit up.
“Oh, no, sweetheart, I got this.” Then he sat up and scooted back a little and popped one button undone.
Bending down, he pressed a kiss to the small patch of skin exposed. He felt her tremble beneath him. Oh, the things he wanted to do with her. He’d been imagining having her in his arms for so many years, it would take more than one night to enact every scenario. It was a damn good thing she’d agreed to marry him. Now he had a lifetime.
Never in a million years had he expected this outcome when he came to her apartment. He had meant to make sure she was all right. Comfort her, hopefully. Let her use his shoulder for her tears. But this. Her willingly in his arms, saying yes to being his wife. Never in a million years.
Another button came undone with ease. His lips inched up, following the path his hands were taking. Each time he found a new spot to kiss, she trembled and a breathy moan left her sweet, luscious lips. He was torn between kissing her soft skin and tangling tongues with her. Both were like being in heaven.
“This is torture. Let me do it.” Her words came out soft and breathy. And not like she wanted him to stop.
Instead of answering, he continued his path upward, undoing another button, his lips meeting silky, beautiful skin. When he neared her breasts, he paused, taking in the view. A white lacy bra covered her, exposing more skin than containing it. He was in love…with this bra. Who knew she wore such sexy lingerie underneath her clothes? Well, now he did, and he’d be letting his imagination run away more and more from now on. He knew it.
He undid the last few buttons, then cupped her breasts. His eyes zeroed in on a rosy nipple, suckling hard as she arched upward off the bed.
“Jaxson…” Her breathy voice had him ramped up and ready.
But he wanted to take this slowly. He wanted to savor every second with her.
“You are so gorgeous. Every inch of you.” Then he slid his hands underneath her and unclasped her bra.
She sat up as he helped her slip off her shirt and bra, tossing them to the floor. Before she could take off his shirt, something he could tell she wanted to do when her hands reached for the bottom, he pushed her down and reclaimed a nipple.
He took his time giving each one attention, biting playfully and kissing afterward to soothe. He knew she liked it as her low moans and constant shifting closer to him didn’t stop, but only increased.
“Okay, I take it back. I’ll fix any button you want, but you need to take that shirt off now.”

EXCERPT

“Jaxson?”
“Sorry, go back to sleep.” He kissed her forehead before grabbing his phone from the floor in his pants pocket.
He knew he wouldn’t be going back to sleep. A phone call this late was never a good thing. After getting information from his captain, he hung up, rolling back toward Mia.
She snuggled in his embrace, making him hate the fact he had to leave.
What would the distance do to them? Would she change her mind? Because he wouldn’t doubt it. He had felt her hesitate several times throughout the evening. Her eyes sparkling with uncertainty as if questioning her decision to take a leap of faith and marry him.
Was he rushing things? Hell, yes. He wouldn’t deny it.
Did he regret it? Not one bit.
He’d been using kid gloves with her since the beginning. It didn’t work. He was jumping all in. He wasn’t backing down about anything. He’d be in her face twenty-four-seven if he had to be.
“I have to go. A case popped up.”
“I’m sorry to hear that.” The shiver that wracked her body made him think she was more than sorry. That she felt the loss deep down in her bones.
Because Mia knew loss. She knew heartache and the horror another person could display.
But she also knew love and caring.
If only she could give it to more than one person—Gabby.
Well, she did give it to him. Last night. Sure, she only said she loved him once, but he’d get her to say it again. And again. And again for the rest of his life. He wouldn’t accept anything less.
“How about I pick you up after your shift and we go out to eat? Maybe celebrate the news with Gabby and Dane.”
Although he didn’t voice the last part as a question, it still came out tentatively. He didn’t want to hide anything from Gabby, but if Mia didn’t want to say anything yet, he’d respect her wishes.
“Should we tell them so soon?”
“Considering you have two dresses to design, I’m going with yes.” Then he sealed his words with a searing kiss, hoping to dissuade any other response from her.
His heart wouldn’t be able to take it if she wanted to keep what was happening between them a secret. But he’d understand if she did. She was nervous. Shy. It was a lot to take in. Hell, he hadn’t even processed it. How could one process the love of their life actually loved them back, especially after being pushed away for so long?
Well, okay, a few months wasn’t that long, but in his head, it felt like centuries. Before that, he had lived years with his love for her to himself. Not even Gabby knew how he had felt.
Shit. He didn’t have a ring either. He had to buy her a ring to make it official. Later today, he’d get her a ring and it should calm some of her worries. Hopefully. Maybe. Hell, he was winging everything here, hoping she didn’t call it all off and tell him to go away and never come back.
“I’ll call you later. I need to go, though.”
She nodded, her eyelids droopy, as he crawled out of bed. It was better she didn’t answer. He probably wouldn’t like the answer, and maybe it wasn’t how she truly felt. She was half asleep right now. When she woke up tomorrow morning, she’d have a clearer head and he’d be able to read her better. In the dark, he couldn’t see the true depths of her eyes and what she was thinking. Mia might think she hid her feelings from the world, but when it came to him, he always felt like he could read her like a book—most of the time, anyway.
Which was why he never told her how he felt. He always knew she wouldn’t take it well, and she hadn’t.
She was his now. She said so, and he’d do anything to keep it that way.

Excerpt

Maybe she should’ve said something to his sweet comment. It’s not like a guy never said she was beautiful before.
But it was the first time she believed it. How did one respond to that? A simple thank you didn’t seem enough. Not to mention awkward. Did she say he was handsome back? He was, but that also felt awkward.
“Gabriella, can I get up?”
“You don’t like where you are?” she asked with a teasing grin. But the panic was setting in. He wanted to pull away from her already. She should’ve responded to his comment.
He kissed her again. “I want to toss this condom away, grab us some beers, and have round two—slower this time. I want to love your body as slowly as I possibly can, savor every single minute. Because I like exactly where I am.”
Oh.
Wow.
This, at times, arrogant, thoughtless man, who could work her until her feet wanted to fall off, could also be the sweetest, kindest man she had ever met. Every time he said such wonderful words, it broke a part of the impenetrable wall she had built a long time ago to keep from getting hurt.
Because keeping people outside of the wall was always easier than letting them in.
This wonderful man was creeping his way inside her walls.
She bit her lip as a smile appeared. “I like exactly where you are, too.”

Excerpt

“Mia, come on, talk to him. See if he’s cheating on you. You’re obviously getting a feeling that he’s doing something wrong if you’re asking me to do this. It’s a little extreme for me to go ‘undercover,’” Gabby said, using quotations with her fingers on the word undercover, “to see if your boyfriend is cheating on you.”
“Since when are cheaters honest? Like he’s going to say, ‘Yeah, Mia baby, I’m not cheating on you.’ He’d never admit it.”
She rolled her eyes. “Oh, God, does he call you baby? That’s so…so…disgusting.”
“It’s sweet. It rolls off his tongue like butter melting on a piece of warm bread. I love it when he calls me that.”
“If you say so. Look, Mia, I can’t take a week off work to go incognito at his work. There’s no way in hell I could lie on the application about prior employment. It’s not in me to lie like that.”
“You don’t have to lie. You were a secretary before.” Mia smirked. “That’s another quarter.”
Gabby raised her eyebrows in disbelief, almost spitting out the small gulp she had consumed. Then she rolled her eyes. “Stop making me swear. I’m blaming you. And I was a secretary when I was nineteen. I’m twenty-nine now. We’re a little too old to be playing these games. Talk to him.”
“I can’t. I don’t want to see him lie to my face.”
“If you think he’s cheating, I repeat—dump. His. Ass.”
“You’re almost up to a dollar.”
“Mia!” Gabby knew she was trying to irritate her.
“I need solid proof before I confront him.” Mia produced another pouty face that was hard to resist. “I need you to do this. His secretary is on maternity leave. It’s only a temp position, so it’s not like you’d be lying that much when you leave after a week. He’s been talking about how all the applicants have been horrible. He’ll hire you on the spot. I know it. Like you said, one week. That’s all I’m asking. I need to know. Then I can dump the lying, cheating, scumbag for sleeping around on me.”
Gabby gulped the rest of her drink, wiping her hand across her lips as if she gained a mustache from the sweet red wine. “How do I let you talk me into shit like this?” She groaned. “Yes, I know, I now owe a dollar.”
Mia screamed in delight, grabbing Gabby around the waist. “You’re the best bestie ever.”
“Fine, bestie. One week. No more.”
“Yes! I knew I could count on you. His name is Champ Holloway.”
“I can’t believe I’m agreeing to this.”
