Prologue 

Script 24923.135: 

“You wake up like it’s any other day of the week. You get ready for work. You scarf down a handful of berries, nuts, and lemon water. Pancakes or anything remotely processed hasn’t been an option all year. You’d get sick from even a lick of syrup. The doctors are confounded, haven’t been able to come up with a diagnosis yet. Oh well, at least you get to stay in shape. 

Like always, you log in at work, the OSA, on time. Such a good girl. You start your task with your colleagues, well, friends. Laura, a fireball of fun, yet also the amazing friend that would break into your house to save your sick ass and take you to the hospital just because you ate one cheese puff. The other friend being Abiola, the sweet pragmatic one who keeps you grounded. 

You’re sleepy. You head to the sleep pods to take a mid-day nap. A handsome face slips in through the darkness behind your eyelids. 

Korin. 

An abduction… You brush it off as an abnormal dream and head back to work. You don’t know this at the time, but he’s a catalyst. Another one. He changes your life forever.

Chapter One 

Just magical. 

I exhaled, thoughtfully trying to relax my muscles as the stinging sensation of each needle greeted my skin. Though I had my eyes shut, I tilted my head ever so slightly and blinked. I refused to let the tears gathering at the corners of my eyes fall. 

“Clench your right fist,” a nurse disrupted my seething. 

I did what she instructed without much thought. I couldn’t give a crap about what was happening around me. All I could think of was hate, in its purest form. Up until this point, I had conceptualized it, bottled it up and shelved it in the corner of my mind. I had no idea how heavy it would feel coursing through my blood.

“Were you dreaming?” the man asked incredulously as he sat down in the empty chair opposite to Will. Will recognized his voice. “You clean up nicely,” the man continued in an almost cheerful manner as if nothing occurred.

He didn’t respond and glared at him, a muscle in his jaw twitched as the anger in his eyes poured through. These people destroyed everything he had ever known and loved in a matter of minutes. 

Like most humans, he thought. The man cleared his throat. 

“Who made you?” 

Will stared straight back. “God.”

The man seemed amused by his response. 

“My name is Patrick Riordan. I work for a company called Auctus. Do you know what that is?” Will ignored him, scanning the room and trying to pick up a signal. “You won’t be able to hack your way out, I’m afraid,” said Riordan. “You know what this is, right?”

He sighed and squeezed his eyes shut. “Faraday room.” 

Riordan nodded. “An advanced version of it, yes. Any and all electrical, phone, and wireless signals are completely blocked off. Nothing can come in or out.”  

Will’s jaw tightened. 

“You overrode the hunter’s systems and manipulated the program in record time. I’ve never seen that before.” His eyes were wide with curiosity and wonder. “How did you do it?”

Will shrugged and gave a half-smile. “Must’ve been pure charisma.” 

Riordan chuckled and stared at him with admiration. “I don’t think you understand what’s happening here, friend. Last winter, a hunter brought in a proxy deer to one of our stores hoping to get it refurbished. But when one of our techs uploaded its system, your image popped up in a recording. Coincidentally the deer’s program had been infiltrated. And after seeing what you did to my proxies yesterday, it’s safe to assume you’re the cause.”

Will seemed unimpressed by the news and shrugged. “What do you want from me?”

“I want to know what you are, and who made you.” Riordan shook his head. “I’m afraid we cannot figure you out. The layer of tissue covering your metal has traces of advanced biological nanotechnology, which proxies don’t have and aren’t compatible with. You also have the most sophisticated firewall program I have ever come across. And I live and breathe AI. Who made you?”

Fatigue lines circled James Walkers eyes and forehead; dry canals of wrinkled flesh ran down the sides of his face. A flood of light washed over him, flickering ever so often. He found himself hissing at that inconvenience before resuming his examination. James spent months inspecting every piece of hardware and taking voice notes—he was ready to proceed. “James Walker, Ph.D.,” he said into the recorder. “After meticulous examination that produced minor wins and fails, everything seems to be in order. The mechanism is responsive. I’m proceeding to the next step—implementation. Cooling systems have taken to the previous modifications, refer to doc-234. Internal examinations will continue intermittently.” James clicked off the recorder and sighed. He walked across the room and paused inches from his destination, letting his eyes scan the table and its contents. The thin, silicone-based polymer suit reflected the soft light in the room. The project was close to completion and when he thought of what was at stake, the usual litany of questions and doubts arose. He scratched his stubble and pushed aside thoughts of consequence. He knew all too well that one wrong move might bring down his research like a flimsy deck of cards. “Positivity doesn’t exist in the realm of fringe science, but you have to try,” he muttered under his breath. Those words fueled James, who focused on the most favorable outcome. The augmented bio-hybrid suit had muscles, tendons, and ligaments designed to replicate the human body—an exact replica. He rolled the table close to the gurney then proceeded to couple the parts together. It took thirty minutes of concentrated effort to get the body sheathed. James took a step back and admired his masterpiece. It reminded him of a Renaissance anatomical painting he once saw in a museum. A smile tugged at the corner of his lips, but he wiped it away with the back of his hand. He attached a transfusion tube to the small glass cylinder filled with dense liquid. He injected the mixture into the body’s cervical vertebrae. Spider-like microscopic nanocells hurried down the spine and spread into the hybrid suit. The muscle tissues expanded and solidified over the impenetrable frame underneath. James watched the process unfold. His heart beat in double time, eager to move to the next phase. The pulsating vibe in his ears synced with his anxiety. He ambled to a wall lined with metal cabinets and retrieved the synthetic skin from its compartment. At the table, he arranged them over the entire body like a giant jigsaw puzzle. He watched the panels of skin adhere to one another. His hands imprisoned within his pockets to resist the urge to touch. Soon, skin covered the mechanical suit and a man lay in its place. The transformation was a success.
