“Your Majesty. Your guests have arrived.” The announcement draws my attention away from mum. Anger is boiling just below the surface like a volcano. I’m ready to erupt when a portly man with a bushy mustache enters the room. Behind him is a willowy brunette, long hair flowing around a simple black dress.

“Lord Kendall. I’m quite pleased you could join us today.” She tips her head in his direction, as he bows before her. “Your Majesty. The honour is all mine.”

“James, this is Lord Xavier Cross, Duke of Kendall.” Mum extends her hand in his direction.

The man bows to me, the woman following. “Your Highness. It’s always a pleasure to be in your presence. May I present my daughter, Zara Cross.” He motions to the woman behind him.

“Zara. I’m thrilled you could join us today.”

“Your Majesty. The pleasure is all mine.” This poor woman’s face is as equally confused as mine. Hers does hold less contempt than mine.

“Zara, it’s nice to meet you.” I try to grab her attention, but her eyes keep flitting around the room. If you’ve never been to the palace, it’s easy to be distracted by the glamour of it all.

“Please, come have some tea.” Mum motions to the small table setup in the sitting room. An unsettled feeling starts to come over me. I don’t know what’s going on today, but I can’t imagine it will be in my favor.

“Thank you, Your Majesty.” This delicate woman accepts a cup and sits. I take the empty seat next to her. Stretching out my legs, I lean back in the chair, drinking my own cup. The harsh look from mum tells me she isn’t pleased. That makes two of us. She straightens, setting her tea down.

“I’m sure you two are wondering why we’ve brought you here today.” Zara gives me a look, only a small one. “The duke and I have entered into an arrangement.”

Oh feck. This can’t be good. “And what sort of arrangement is that?”

“An arranged marriage.” Her voice is curt as she drops the bomb.

EXCERPT

The limestone cliffs are jagged and unwelcoming from the boat. The small entrance to the cave is even less welcoming from this view. Celine tenses under my arms, and I squeeze her tighter to me. 

“Lean back, everyone, so you do not hit your head on the rocks,” the boat guide instructs. 

Celine leans back into me, as I lean into the back of the boat. The oars scraping against the side of the boat are heavy as we head into darkness. We pass under the walls of the cave with inches to spare. The sun disappears as darkness takes over. Inside the cave, bright aquamarine colors dance in the water. Finally able to sit up, we see a few other boats drift lazily in the cave. 

“The waters are pristine,” Celine whispers. “Stunning.” 

The water reflecting off her face is what’s stunning. She’s still leaning back into me, not quite ready to let go in this tiny cave. Voices echo off the walls as we take in the crystal waters. 

“I don’t think the water at the beach is this clear.” The water whirls and sparkles with the motion of the boat. It’s like thousands of gleaming diamonds are floating just beneath the surface. “Thank you for coming with me, Celine. I’m glad I got to experience this place with you,” I whisper softly into her ear. 

She grabs my hand and places a kiss in the center of my palm. “I should be thanking you. I get to have all these new and wonderful experiences I wouldn’t have if I was with my usual group.” 

Her deep brown eyes are mirrors for the water. Now that we have this thing between us, her eyes give her away. I love seeing how happy she is on this adventure with me. These last few trips, I was left to explore on my own. Or I just stayed near the hotel and did any planning from afar. But having Celine at my side now makes these little side trips infinitely better. I can be carefree with someone at my side.
