Starting the Riot (Riot MC, #0.5) by Karen Renee

Title: Starting the Riot
Series: Riot MC #0.5
Author: Karen Renee
Genre: MC Romance
Release Date: April 28, 2020
Cover Design: 100Covers
Jackie Eastmon’s life changes after a brutal attack on her best friend. While getting Simone the help she needs, Jackie meets a rough, burly biker.
Henry “Volt” Adler, President of the Riot MC Jacksonville chapter, admires Jackie’s rarely found spunk and dedication to Simone. The timing is all wrong for him to pursue Jackie. He runs into her nearly two years later, and he will stop at nothing to make her his.
Jackie struggles with this bossy, alpha-male in her life. When she learns he knows who attacked Simone but hasn’t made them pay, she questions if he’s the man for her.
Upon the two-year anniversary of the attack, Simone attempts suicide, and Volt hates seeing Jacqueline hurting for her friend. He orders his brothers to make the attackers pay for what they did to Simone.

“So… any of your other girlfriends take you to an Off-Broadway play?”
From the corner of my eye, I saw his face turn to me in the car’s dimness. “Bikers don’t have girlfriends, Jacqueline.”
I contemplated this. Whitney had said Cal was forthcoming about it being a one-time only deal, but Volt had said nothing like that to me. Then I remembered the forward couple at Cal’s house. “That red-head seemed pretty committed, like a girlfriend, to your biker brother.”
“Abby’s his property,” Volt said.
I nearly choked because his words took me so off-guard. “Did you just say ‘property?’”
“Yeah. It’s an important status in my world.”
The light was red at Stockton Street, and I turned to Volt. “Being anyone’s property is never a good status.”
Tension filled the cramped cabin of my old Toyota Corolla.
“You need to mind your mouth, Jacqueline. You aren’t part of my world.” He paused as if he was holding something back. “Don’t make a judgment you’re in no educated position to make.”
The light turned green, and I motored us down Stockton toward the condo. I let his words replay in my mind and I knew that was his wordy way of saying I was on the cusp of saying something out of ignorance.
I tried to lighten my tone when I asked, “You’ve heard of women’s rights and all of that, right?”
“Yeah, and before you go all Susan B. Anthony on me, a woman only gets a Riot MC property cut when that brother is certain she’s the old lady for him.”
“Well, this gets better and better,” I muttered.
“Sure does. That’s the ultimate form of commitment, Susan B.”
Confusion was still at work in my mind, but I shoved it aside, deciding to let this subject drop. Still, I couldn’t help but be a smart-ass. “That’s Ms. Anthony to you.”
Karen Renee is the author of the Riot MC Series. She has wanted to be a writer from a very early age, and she’s finally bringing that dream to life. She has worked in advertising, banking, and local television media research. She is a proud wife and mother, and a Jacksonville native. When she’s not at the soccer field or cooking, you can find her at her local library, the grocery store, in her car jamming out to some tunes, or hibernating while she writes and/or reads books.

Sometimes, all it takes is a hot meal—or a broken heater—to spark a long-lost flame!

Marilyn

I was looking for a handyman, not a “handsy” man.
And don't think I was too old to know the difference.
You wouldn't believe the things these eyes had seen.
Thought I'd seen it all—until I joined Tinder.
I was swiping men away like flies. To the left. To the left.
Too grouchy. Too gassy.
Not enough hair. Not enough teeth.
I was elderly, not dead.
The last person I’d expected to see was Clyde Jenkins.
Now, here was a man who could handle his tools.

Clyde

I was looking for a home-cooked meal now and again … and maybe a respectable woman to warm my bed.
After spending a little time on this online dating app, I wasn't sure there were many women my age still alive out there.
Then, I stumbled across a photo that gave my pacemaker—and other parts—a tickle.
Marilyn May … I knew she was a feisty lady and a dang good cook.
She’d also happened to be my first sweetheart.
So, I did what any self-respecting man in his post-prime would do.
I swiped right, trimmed my nose hairs, and pulled out my church shirt.

They don't call these the golden years for nothing!

The boys laugh, pouring only two shots. They both stand staring at me, Grey to my right and Liam to my left, as my head shifts slowly between them. It’s my turn to toast. Liam licks the side of his glass, cleaning some liquid that’s spilled, and my eyes dart to his tongue, watching it drag over the smooth surface, lapping up the Jack. Before I can stop myself, the words are already out. “To bad ideas and the boys who get me into trouble.” The shot glasses hit the counter the minute they drink, and I tip my head back laughing. I rub my lips together and smile at them. “We need music.” “Done.” Liam grabs the bottle of Jack and walks over to his phone that’s on the counter, picking it up and looking down with a serious expression. He stays that way for only a moment before his beautiful face pops back up smiling, as the music filters out through speakers in the ceiling. I wander over toward the couch, Grey right behind me, as the music amps up, hitting a crescendo. Liam turns it up loud, and Grey grabs me, spinning me around. We start to jump and thrash our arms around, Liam joining in, losing ourselves to the music and yelling to the ceiling. It’s perfect. They’re perfect. The oversized shirt I’m wearing bounces up, exposing glimpses of G-string, but I don’t care because it doesn’t matter. Nothing matters except this night. Liam takes a swig from the Jack and passes it over to Grey as I shake my hips and turn in a circle. I lick my lips, my teeth sinking into the bottom one, as Liam comes up behind me, matching my rhythm and swaying back and forth. His hand splays over my stomach, and the warmth I was feeling from the liquor feels like ice in comparison to his large palm. He turns us to face Grey, who is standing stock-still, bottle in hand and a cigarette lifting to his lips. He takes in a long drag as he watches us dance. It’s the way he watches that makes my entire body feel on fire. He’s arrogant. Entitled. Like a goddamn king. My very favorite version. My eyes drift to his torso, taking in the tattoo again and smiling. It’s fitting for him— “I am not led, I lead.” He does lead, everyone but me. In fact, I’ll never tell that I already knew what it meant. Sometimes, it’s more fun to let him believe his saying. He juts his chin, calling me to him, but I don’t move. Try again. Liam nudges my waist, speaking into my ear. “Go on, Van. He won’t bite. Unless you ask him to.” Holy, hellfire and brimstone. I’m going to burn for this. Closing the three feet between us feels like the longest walk of my life, each step erasing the line before it. My throat is dry, but I’m already wet everywhere else. My thoughts are barreling around in my mind like they’re all in a freefall. But all I know is that I want whatever Grey has to offer. Grey looks down at me as I come to a stop in front of him, peeking up through my lashes. “You wanna hit?” He brings the cigarette back between his lips, sucking in the smoke, and I nod, but he doesn’t hand it to me, just blows up into the air. Grey’s eyes lock to mine as his head tips back down. “Ask me nicely.” “No.” My hair is swept over my shoulder as the heat from Liam’s body engulfs me from behind. His lips graze my neck as he inhales up my jawline, making my head tilt and breath suck in between my teeth. Lines aren’t just being blurred. They don’t fucking exist anymore. “Come on, Van. Ask us nicely,” Liam whispers, and my eyes shut. When I open them, Grey flicks his cigarette into the fire. He licks his lips, letting his eyes drift down my body to where Liam’s finger is tracing the hem of the T-shirt at the top of my thigh. Liam’s finger runs back and forth indecently slow, barely ducking under the fabric, but I’m already panting, wet, and hungry. So fucking hungry. They’re really good at this. “Were you actually talking about smoking?” I ask, already suspecting the answer. “Not even a little, Cherry.”

I used his body to forget the pain until the line we drew was buried under muddied water.

I used to believe in three things:
That true love only existed once, heartbreak couldn’t kill you, and everything happened for a reason.

But if that were true, I never would have watched Daniel McCray get married to another woman, have a beautiful baby girl, and pass away before my very eyes.

Everything I believed was I lie.

Until I met them.

I can’t believe we’re even having this conversation. “You’re not the boss of me, Easton. I’m sorry if I hurt your feelings about your friend doing the piercing, but it’s not the end of the world. And it would be money all the same if you let me pay. Why are you being so stubborn about this?”
“Not the boss of you,” he repeats, a slow smirk curving his features. His body turns to face me, towering over me when he straightens to full height. “I seem to recall that differently, especially when we’re in your bedroom and you’re begging me to bury my cock deeper inside you. Hmm. Have you forgotten how much you moan my name when I lick you, or how you pull my hair to go faster, or plead for me to fuck you just the way I know you like?”
My thighs press together as heat sweeps over my body. He knows what he’s doing because he chuckles like this amuses him. But I don’t find his mood swings funny. “What does that have to do with anything?”
He leans closer, brushing his lips against my ear as he speaks. “I should have been the one to give you what you wanted today because I know what you want. Just like I know what you sound like when you come, what it feels like when you squeeze my cock with that tight pussy of yours, and how loud you get when you don’t have to hold back. You want freedom, Piper. You always have.”
When he draws back, I’m stunned speechless. He takes advantage of it and shoots me a wink, causing my lips to part. He’s never winked before. And it’s … wow. Between those words and that gesture, I’m not sure I can properly fathom a response, and he knows it. Which is why, this time, he walks away first.
